Farmers Rangiora was closed off to the public and subsequently demolished in 2014, after sustaining critical damage from the 2011 Canterbury quakes.
The new 6,500m² Farmers Rangiora, designed by Ignite Architects and constructed by Watts & Hughes, provides an innovative building design for the retail brand while maintaining the local streetscape character and adding a revived sense of vibrancy to the town’s centre.
Ignite Architects specified Sto, incorporating the StoPoren Panel Facade System with over 900m² of exterior facade construction that was juxtaposed with dark metal cladding to break down the building's scale. Additionally 600m² of S-Protect Anti Graffiti Coating System was applied across exterior pedestrian levels.
Installed and rendered by Advanced Exterior Plastering, the StoPoren Panel Facade System is made up of 2200 x 600 x 50mm Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) panels, reinforced with ductile steel. The panels fix horizontally in a brick-like pattern, creating an economical, solid yet lightweight facade over timber or steel frame.
Also scoped were areas of 100mm thick panel; which allowed for the negative offset in the facade design.
StoPoren is a versatile building material for commercial builds thanks to it light weight, ventilated cavity design, non-combustibility and thermal and acoustic properties. The panel is not only easy to work with, but is also quick to install, lowering construction times.
The StoPoren is reinforced with a StoArmat Render System incorporating a Stolit K 1.0mm finishing render to provide maximum system longevity, security and weather resistance. This futureproofs the build with a sustainable and reliable facade, combating urban mechanical stresses and also seismic movement.
Another innovative Sto product used on Farmers Rangiora was the S-Protect Anti Graffiti Coating System, which was applied 3.0m in height across all rendered and precast panel areas. This clear coating system consists of a clear matt, water-based, two pack reactive formula that provides a hard, durable barrier that can be easily cleaned using S-Protect Sensitive or Hi Strength cleaners to remove unwanted graffiti attacks.
Farmers Rangiora is a great example of planning, communication and performance that reflects on the Sto principles of “building with conscience”. It’s great to see Farmers back in Rangiora once again.
