The North Methodist Church had existed on the site for 100 years, but was demolished after receiving severe damage from the Canterbury earthquakes between September 2010 and February 2011. With the church complex demolished, a cleared site was left for a sustainable approach.

Christchurch based Dalman Architects designed the new building as a reference to its predecessor, but with updates that correspond to the changing needs of the congregation. A minimalistic approach in the design and the intentional restriction of use of details and materials helped to achieve a stronger expression of architecture without exceeding costs.

The project was constructed by Arrow International with Sto being selected by Dalman Architecture to scope and supply the StoTherm Insulation System over the timber frame build, installed by Sto Registered LBP Contractor, Advanced Exterior Plastering.

The North Methodist Church required a cost-effective, lightweight EPS façade system with stable and substantial insulation values. Easy to cut, detail and assemble, 60mm StoTherm Panels (R1.57) were fitted and fixed with StoTherm impact anchors to secure and wrap the building in a lightweight, thermally stable envelope. The benefits: helping to keep the inside cool by insulating against the heat of the warm summer months, as well as keeping the heat in during cooler months — creating a harmonious indoor environment thoughout the year. Other benefits include energy conservation and an external dew point, which helps to combat condensation and mould.

Used on much of the exterior façade and thanks to the StoArmat Render System with its flexible and crack-resistant properties and integrated Stolit K 1.5mm render finish and StoColor Lotusan, the North Methodist Church was provided with a reliable, durable and sustainable façade, able to withstand climatic conditions and mechanical and seismic stress, while also meeting the selected style.

The innovative StoColor Lotusan applied as a coating is another product that was specified on the North Methodist Church. Incorporating Intelligent Technology with a bionic 'lotus-effect,' this unique self-cleaning façade paint is suitable for masonry and rendered surfaces. Water and dirt are unable to cling to the surface, so every time it rains the façade is simply washed clean, resulting in optimum facade protection as the façade remains dry and pristine for longer.

Completed in early 2016, the North Methodist Church is a great example of planning, communication and performance that reflects on the Sto principles of thinking globally and acting locally.
