Viking Roofspec were tasked with replacing the 30-something-year-old roof on the Whakapapa ski field café and equipment-hire buildings.
Whakapapa on Mount Ruapehu is a genuine alpine environment; snow, wind and rain throughout winter and surprisingly high sunshine hours and temperatures over summer — all really tough on building materials and systems.
Additionally, Whakapapa sits within a World Heritage listed National Park administered by DOC who also took an active stakeholder interest in the building maintenance programme.
A Viking WarmRoof system was proposed using Viking Lybra TorchOn SBS membrane as the waterproofing component of the system coupled with Aquaknight dome drains to provide an integrated solution.
Why Viking specify Aquaknight drains?
- Roofing system integrity: Aquaknight dome drains provide a secure clamping force at the perimeter to ensure a leak-free and weathertight hardware-to-membrane interface.
- Performance certified by FlowLab: Aquaknight is the only NZ manufacturer to have each product thoroughly performance tested and certified. Accurate performance specifications enabled the project design engineer, Viking, DOC and the local Council to have complete confidence in the capacity of the drainage system.
- It’s personal: Aquaknight is a New Zealand business dedicated to the New Zealand market. The business owner is the main point of contact for product sales and service and systems design.
Project completion
The new café roof with Aquaknight drains delivers superior weather-tightness and energy efficiency all year round. The SBS membrane roof complements the building design and will serve Whakapapa and its customers for many years to come.
About FlowLab
FlowLab is a purpose designed and built testing facility that measures and certifies gravity fed drainage systems for flow rate performance. Why is FlowLab testing needed? To ensure that a plumbing system will meet the design intent of architects and hydraulics engineers and gain approval by building officials (councils).
