Trade Breakfast Solves Deck Design Challenge

When builder Darryl Rutter recently attended a Trade Breakfast at Placemakers in Kapiti, he timed this well and was lucky to run into Marshall Innovations' local Lower North Island Area Manager, Hamish Knox. Darryl was looking for a suitable deck solution which would meet his clients’ needs for a local project on Marine Parade, Waikanae.

In this particular situation, Darryl explained that his client desired a smooth transition at floor level of the door opening in order to achieve indoor to outdoor flow onto the new timber deck, which surrounds the house and provides space for outdoor living. Hamish recommended the perfect solution with Marshall Innovations' ProFoot system.

The ProFoot Adjustable Deck Pedestal System, when used with the EVO aluminium substructure framing, offers rigidity and stability, with fine adjustment, for decking surfaces anywhere ranging from 10mm clearance beneath up to 500mm.

With minimal height tolerance at the threshold, and a fall (for water drainage) allowed for beneath the decking, the solution for Darryl's project was EVO Slim 60 x 20mm aluminium sub-frame clip-fixed to pedestals in sizes XS to XL, installed on cork pads. Marshall Innovations assisted with specific deck calculations, offered on-site support and provided deck/component layout drawings as required for both decks, and the builder was able to do the rest.

The Aluminium Draintec profile is an option for finishing the deck perimeter; this helps with drainage, and prevention of ‘splashback’ from rainwater onto the side of house (or into the opening), whilst remaining accessible for maintenance/cleaning. The 19mm Garapa timber decking was securely fixed in-place using visible fixings: Aluminium Profile-drilling screws — also supplied by Marshall Innovations Ltd. Garapa is a very durable timber, and an excellent choice with resistance to rot, decay and fire.
