Reviving Westhaven Marina: Sustainable Timber Solutions with JSC’s Cumaru and Garapa Hardwoods

Project background

The Westhaven Marina, a staple of Auckland’s maritime community, recently underwent significant redevelopment to enhance public access and sustainable infrastructure. Managed by Eke Panuku and JFC (John Fillmore Contracting), the Pile Berth Redevelopment aims to modernise the marina, addressing both aesthetic appeal and environmental responsibility.

Product selection

To meet the durability and environmental goals of the project, Cumaru and Garapa hardwoods were selected for their robustness in high-traffic, outdoor environments. Cumaru was chosen for the boardwalk decking due to its Class 1 durability rating, resistance to fungi and insects, and FSC 100% certification, which aligns with the marina’s sustainability focus. Garapa battens, installed in multiple profiles, provide a complementary visual texture, enhancing the overall design while maintaining durability.

Installation and key benefits

The Cumaru decking, laid in a 175x45mm profile, is not only aesthetically pleasing but also withstands constant pedestrian use. Over time, its reddish-brown hue will gracefully transition to light golden brown, and eventually to a beautiful silver-grey, blending naturally with the marina’s waterfront setting. Garapa battens in 140 x 19mm and 90 x 19mm profiles enhance the space’s architectural details, offering both function and visual appeal. Together, these hardwoods embody JSC’s commitment to quality and sustainable building solutions.

Outcome

The boardwalk extension and new floating berths have revitalised Westhaven Marina, creating more green spaces and accessible pathways. As Eke Panuku’s Capital Project Delivery Manager, Jeanine McMullien, notes, “Westhaven Marina is an iconic Auckland destination that is vibrant, accessible, and attracts people to the sea.” The use of Cumaru and Garapa timber in this project not only supports environmental stewardship but also promises longevity and low maintenance.
