TorchOn Membranes
Description

Whether designing for a flat roof in the middle of the Southern Alps or in the sunny Bay of Islands, Viking Roofspec has a BRANZ appraised TorchOn membrane system designed to withstand the most extreme climate conditions:

Viking Phoenix Super APAO (Amorphous Polyalphaolefin) Hybrid TorchOn Membrane: Viking's 'Platinum' solution incorporates the best of APP and SBS membrane features and comes with a 25 year warranty. Its unequalled cold flexibility goes down to (-35°C), and it has a high-temperature resistance of +140°C, meaning it can be used in any climate.

Viking Gemini APP (Atactic Polypropylene) TorchOn Membrane: Viking Gemini APP is a robust and versatile membrane system ideally suited to New Zealand's North Island (excluding the Central Volcanic Plateau) and the Pacific. APP membranes have a high melt point when in contact with a flame and boast some of the highest puncture resistance credentials in the market.

Viking Lybra SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) TorchOn Membrane: Viking Lybra SBS is made from 'rubberised' bitumen. These properties are designed for geographical locations that experience climatic extremes, such as New Zealand’s South Island and the North Island's Central Volcanic Plateau. Viking Lybra SBS membranes have a lower melt point and high cold-flexibility credentials allowing them to be exposed to lower temperatures without fracturing.

Viking Roofspec has a team of technical and design specialists available to assist with specification. Viking Roofspec also has NZ's only established three-stage, hands-on TorchOn licensing programme to ensure work is delivered to the highest quality, to specification and most importantly is 100% water-tight.

Viking Halley-P NO FLAME: Viking Halley-P NO FLAME is a self-adhered two-layer membrane system — the newest member to Viking Roofspec's bituminous membrane category. Halley-P NO FLAME employs a special bitumen and adhesive resin mixture that allows the membrane layers to be installed without the use of a propane gas torch. Halley-P NO FLAME is a hybrid of two compounds: a plasticised APP bitumen mixed with a rubberised SBS one. The 'NO FLAME' aspect comes from the lower surface and the selvedge edges consisting of an elastomeric pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Scope of Use

Viking TorchOn membranes are suited to tricky / confined roofs where it can be 'bled' in to vulnerable areas such as tight corners and awkward areas susceptible to leaks like roof penetrations, internal corners and gutter junctions.

It is suitable for low-slope roofs (flat or curved), gutters and parapets, waterproofing beneath a floating deck, inland and coastal conditions, commercial and residential buildings.

Viking TorchOn waterproofing membranes have  been assessed as a roof waterproofing membrane on buildings within the following scope:

  • The scope limitations of NZS 3604:2011 and NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1; or,
  • The scope limitations of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1 with regards to building height and floor plan area when subject to specific structural design; and,
  • Situated in NZS 3604:2011 WInd Zones, up to and including Extra High; and,
  • With substrates of plywood or suspended concrete slab; and,
  • With a minimum fall for roofs of 1:30 (2 degrees).
  • Viking Phoenix Super APAO Waterproofing Membrane has also been assessed for use as roof waterproofing membranes on buildings within the following scope:

Subject to specific structural and weathertightness design situated in wind pressures up to a maximum design differential ultimate limit state (ULS) of 6 kPa: and,
With substrates of plywood or suspended concrete slab.

Limitations on Use

Systems must be installed by a Viking Roofspec Trained and Approved Installer.

Statement of Building Code Compliance
  • Clause B1 STRUCTURE: Performance B1.3.1 and B1.3.4 (b) (c) (d) (e) for the relevant physical conditions of B1.3.3 (p). Viking TorchOn membranes meet this requirement.
  • Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1 (b), 15 years. Viking TorchOn membranes meet this requirement.
  • Clause E2 EXTERNAL MOISTURE: Performance E2.3.1, E2.3.2 and E2.3.7 (b) and (c) Viking TorchOn membranes meet this requirement.
  • Clause F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS: Performance F2.3.1. Viking TorchOn membranes meet this requirement and will not present a health hazard to people.
Other Performance Attributes
  • BRANZ Appraised (no. 567, 2014)
  • The bitumen used in Viking TorchOn systems are bi-products of the oil refining process, providing a constructive use of this waste product
  • A Viking TorchOn roof can be overlaid at the end of its useful life, avoiding the dumping of the old roof and the filling of landfills with inorganic waste

Warranty

  • Viking Gemini APP and Viking Lybra SBS all come with a 20-year product warranty
  • Viking Phoenix Super APAO comes with a 25-year product warranty
  • All systems are eligible for Viking's Full System Warranty, which covers the product and installation in one document
