Tucked away down a long private drive, 100m from Paekakariki Beach, sits an intricate A-frame-like, double storey home in dire need of some TLC. As it was due for a complete renovation, the homeowners opted to replace the roof materials to complement the new colour scheme and ensure complete watertightness.
The existing roofing material looked like second-hand Butynol that had been stripped off another job and then re-applied. Some of it even looked to be offcuts, pieced together like a jigsaw.
After vigorous research on pitched roofing materials, the homeowner reached out to Viking, enquiring about their CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles as the colour possibilities caught her eye. She selected the Highland Slate profile in Smokey Quartz.
Fortunately, the old-pieced-together Butynol roof had kept the substrate dry. A thorough inspection of the substrate deemed it structurally sound to keep in place. Small holes were drilled into it to help with airflow into the existing roof space, and then new Strandsarking was installed on purlins over the top.
Aside from the tricky detailing of two turrets along with the challenge of working on a 45° pitch, the rest of the installation was relatively straightforward. The Approved Applicator also:
- Replaced the old skylight with three new ones
- Increased the upstand heights to meet E2
- Installed apron flashings and waterproofed the chimney box
Additionally, to enhance the aesthetics, custom made copper barge flashings were also installed.
The homeowners are delighted with the finished look of their new roof. Paired with the upgrade of an exterior paint job, their home has been completely transformed!
The Approved Applicator delivered excellent workmanship and service to such an unorthodox project!
