Viking CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles Outperform Mother Nature

New Zealand is subject to some of the world's most severe climatic conditions including gale force winds, torrential rain, hail and snow, extreme UV and salt spray. These pose challenges to all construction products and especially roofing materials as the roof is usually a building's first line of defence.

Viking CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles

BRANZ appraised (no.276) and built from the toughest of materials, Viking's CertainTeed asphalt shingle system has been successfully standing up to Mother Nature for over 25 years in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Weathertightness

The 'shingling' method of roofing, ie. an overlapping layer that sheds water onto the one below partially tucked under it, has stood the test of time for thousands of years. By making these layers self-sealing as well as installing them onto a bituminous underlay, a superior watertight finish ensues. Watch the animation above to see the installation processes.

A Healthy Building — Ventilation

The CertainTeed asphalt shingle system has the world's most efficient ridge and apron ventilation system for shingle roofs. This ensures a healthier building through the promotion of air movement via the intake and expulsion of fresh air in the building.

Coastal Conditions

The properties of CertainTeed asphalt shingles make them suitable for both inland and coastal conditions. They are highly resistant to the atmosphere of seaside environments which has caused and continues to cause corrosion with some metal roofing types. Accordingly, the CertainTeed asphalt shingle system meets the Building Code requirements for all corrosion zones.

Wind

100 years of testing, development and proven real-life performance worldwide has officially deemed three out of four of Viking's CertainTeed profiles as warranted to withstand winds up to New Zealand's highest wind zone being 'Extra High' (gusts up to 205km/hour).

Structural Integrity

The structural integrity of an asphalt shingle system is enhanced with the installation of its timber sarking substrate whether that be plywood or an appropriately accredited strandsarking system. Both lightweight and durable, the timber substrate appropriately fastened to its purlins or directly onto the trusses, essentially becomes one complete diaphragm that braces the entire building. What could be more reassuring to a building owner? — Especially in this 'seismically-challenged' part of the world where debris shaken loose from a roof (such as individual concrete or slate tiles) can be fatal.

UV Resistance

The combination of specially formulated 3M natural stone coating and fiberglass reinforcing, means high UV and extreme temperature exposure does not affect the shingles' integrity and performance.
