Fire Rated Group 1-S Floc Outperforms Synthetic Alternatives

Providing a high level of fire safety is a priority for Floc — T&R Interior Systems’ 100% wool acoustic range. Having achieved a Group 1-S rating under BRANZ testing, Floc is proven to offer a natural, safe, and carefully developed option for interior spaces.

The Group 1-S rating is the highest fire safety standard that can be achieved, meaning that in the event of a fire, the flashover — the point at which a small fire grows into a large one — does not occur for a minimum of 20 minutes. As well as that, the smoke generated remains below a specified maximum.

One of the ways Floc outperforms its synthetic counterparts like polyester is its fire performance. Wool releases very little heat and produces significantly less smoke when exposed to flames. Instead of melting away, as synthetic fibres do, Floc wool panels char, maintaining their integrity and limiting the spread of fire.

This superior performance is the result of extensive research and development. By incorporating a clever and safe fire retardant — completely free of red-listed chemicals — Floc achieves its Group 1-S status while remaining true to its natural, environmentally conscious roots.

Floc’s wool panels continue to demonstrate how natural materials can offer not only acoustic and environmental benefits but also critical safety advantages for commercial and educational spaces. As designers and architects look for materials that balance aesthetics, function, and safety, Floc stands out as a comprehensive solution.
