What a Load of Rubbish! saveBOARD Paperfaced Internal Lining Saves 11,130kgs Waste from Landfill

When Etch Architecture designed a new home, the owners were committed to sustainability without compromising on performance or cost. Their choice of Paperfaced internal linings from saveBOARD checked all the right boxes: planet, performance, and price.

“We were astounded by the impact our decision to use Paperfaced made on the environment,” said homeowners Christine and Bill. “We saved 11,130kg of waste from landfill and reduced our carbon footprint by 5,220 kg CO2e. The cost was competitive, and the product's CodeMark certification gave us confidence. We thought, why wouldn’t we use it!”

Paul Charteris, CEO and Founder of saveBOARD, highlighted the product's environmental benefits: “The numbers currently under verification by Environmental Product Declaration Australasia show Paperfaced at -4.31 kg CO2/m² (A1-3). This is a game-changer when comparing saveBOARD to traditional building materials.”

Upcycling manufacturing process

saveBOARD products are manufactured from shredded and compressed composite packaging and soft plastics. Each board saves approximately 25kg of waste from landfill — equivalent to about 400 food and beverage cartons and 1,000 pieces of plastic. The saveBOARD Product Steward Program also contributes significantly to waste diversion, with approximately 960kg of site waste returned to saveBOARD to be transformed into new boards. Additionally, the builder opted for saveBOARD's cut-to-length option, reducing time on site and eliminating excess waste.

High performance and durability

Paperfaced internal linings offer high performance bracing, high impact resistance, and durability under extreme conditions, such as flooding. While the surface is textured and may have air bubbles or creases, these characteristics necessitate a Level 5 finish, which should be considered during installation. Despite these minor imperfections, Paul Charteris emphasises the product’s strengths: “Paperfaced is an environmentally friendly substitute for specialist plasterboard or plywood applications that require high performance bracing or impact resistance. It is especially valuable for projects where environmental certification, circularity, and material transparency are critical.”

Commitment to quality and compliance

The CodeMark certification of Paperfaced not only validates the quality and compliance of saveBOARD products but also reinforces saveBOARD’s mission to provide eco-friendly building solutions that do not compromise on performance or design.

By choosing Paperfaced, architects, builders and homeowners alike can contribute to a more sustainable future while enjoying a high-quality, cost-effective building material that stands up to the demands of modern construction.
