Prolam’s structural timber solutions are firm favourites with architects like John Hoogerbrug who seek the freedom to forge new frontiers in contemporary design and construction.
John’s creative use of Prolam visual beams in the Mahia Retreat, one of the winners of the NZIA 2024 Gisborne & Hawke’s Bay Architecture Awards, has turned structural design components into stunning architectural features.
Perched above Taylors Bay, the hilltop hideaway features exposed timber beams which frame the outlook, while adding warmth and a sense of calm to the home’s living spaces.
Two large Prolam glulam beams spliced together and measuring over eight metres were custom manufactured for the project. Running at 90 degrees to one another, the beams support long-span openings over the living spaces and windows and doors leading to the deck.
“Over and above their ability to deliver the spans and structural support required, were the aesthetic choices and the finishes available on the visual grade beams offered,” John says. “This allowed us to use them as a feature — almost as a piece of art.”
Dedicated to ensuring architects have access to the most advanced engineered timber products, Prolam’s solution-focused approach is providing new and exciting ways to incorporate glulam into building design.
