Outdoor living played a key role in this Auckland home renovation with the homeowners wanting to create a space that would be equally perfect for relaxing, entertaining or keeping their teenage sons entertained. To achieve this, a Bask Outdoor Living System from Juralco was chosen to ensure a stunning and versatile outdoor space that can be enjoyed year round.

Living with the unpredictability of Auckland weather, the clients knew from the start that they wanted some kind of opening roof system to help provide shelter and shade or conversely let the sun in. They explored options with the team at Juralco, ultimately opting for the Outdoor Living system due to its flexibility both during operation and in terms of meeting their home’s unique design challenges.

The Bask Outdoor Living System is an opening louvre roof system offering freestanding, integrated and wall mounted options to suit different projects. The opening louvres allow homeowners to control the amount of sun, light, air and shade in their outdoor spaces to ensure comfortable outdoor living year-round. And key for this project, the system can be customised to meet the requirements of each unique project.

Assemble detailed the wall mounted option for the home, in a design featuring two bays which cover the full width of the deck. With a limited site featuring aluminium sliding doors with little space above the soffit, the architects appreciated how easy it was to adapt the system to suit the extension design.

“The technical literature from Juralco was really comprehensive. The design manual and span tables effectively communicated the system parameters which helped us to make effective design decisions,” says Tim de Beer, designer at Assemble. “As it was quite a tight site, we wanted to maximise the outdoor living space without having unnecessary structural members breaking up the space. We were able to design the Outdoor Living System quickly and without hassle which was a real time saver.”

Installation of the system was straightforward thanks to the Juralco network of installers who also completed the home’s Sanctuary Fence and Gate system. And the white powder coat of the system ensured a cohesive look with the home’s joinery and weatherboard cladding.

The homeowners appreciate the practicality of the wall mounted system, which enables integrated drainage for a cleaner look. “We like the fact the roof is self-draining. When it’s closed, it’s effectively watertight, and any water flows off the roof to the downpipes which are concealed within the posts.”

And the ability to enjoy their new outdoor living area no matter the weather has been a huge benefit. “We really love how we can create shade in hot weather, shelter in winter, and open up the louvres to let light in whenever we want. It’s like adding an extension to the house.”
