When designing an accessible bathroom/wetroom area, look no further than the JESANI Linear Drainage Channel range. The only BRANZ appraised Wetroom linear channels in New Zealand have been designed to provide peace of mind living on so many levels. Lifemark — a division of CCS Disability has also approved the product range for use for creating a safe and accessible bathroom/wetroom area.
The bathroom would have to be one of the most highly functioning rooms in the home. It is the only room that everyone requires access to, to be able to shower, soak in the bath, wash hands and go to the toilet. There can be up to five serviced water inlets into this space and that in turn requires adequate drainage.
Within the bathroom, there are some areas that can be very difficult for someone with a disability to access. Let’s look at the shower; the shower design is focused on the containment of water, so it does not escape the shower cubicle/zone. The nib walls surrounding the shower are there to contain such water and the respective created four-way fall in the floor will then allow the water to flow to the drain.
The nib walls can be tricky to negotiate when stepping into the shower and anyone with a disability will struggle, however, there are plenty of accidents that happen for able-bodied people too. The four-way falls to a centre circular outlet in the shower will leave the floor uneven to stand on and difficult for any mobility aids to have enough stability to aid its operator.
An alternative design for this space to create accessibility for everyone is to incorporate a level entry linear drainage channel leading into the shower zone. A one-way fall to the channel is all that is required. This design eliminates the hazard of a nib wall and uneven fall in the floor. It's as simple as that.
