WarmSpan Tray System
Description

Viking WarmSpan is a warm roof that includes a proprietary steel tray substrate, supplied by Viking, to make up a complete roof system. WarmSpan comprises of a wide-spanning steel tray roof deck that also forms the vapour barrier with its clever flashing system. The Kingspan Polyisocyanurate (PIR) rigid insulation panels are adhered on top, and the surface is waterproofed with any of Viking Roofspec's sheet membranes.

Unlike Viking’s WarmRoof system that is installed on an existing concrete, ply or steel substrate already in-situ (new or old), a Viking WarmSpan system has been specifically engineered and tested to comfortably exceed New Zealand’s Building Code’s minimum standards. The WarmSpan system has a spanning ability between purlins of up to 3.6m (versus the 400mm centred joists required under a heavy 17mm plywood substrate for a traditional membrane roof). This reduces a building’s overall structural cost without compromising the integrity of the building and delivers increased performance and greater durability.

Viking WarmSpan avoids using unnecessary components such as mechanical fasteners and cover-boards, producing a simple and energy-efficient three-layer system.

 Components of a Viking WarmSpan system:

  • Viking WarmSpan proprietary steel-tray substrate
  • Kingspan Polyiso insulation panel (including tapered)
  • Any of Viking’s sheet membrane systems
Key Features
  • The industry's only New Zealand Engineer-accredited warm roof system
  • Avoids unnecessary components — simplicity and thermal efficiency
  • Cost-effective
  • Spanning ability (substrate supports can be as wide as 3.6m centres)
  • Less weight than a traditional membrane roof
  • No fasteners required means no thermal bridging
  • Highest possible fire rating — Group 1S
  • Integrated vapour barrier (one less layer than other systems)
  • Strong wind uplift resistance
  • Polyiso board supplied by the world leading rigid insulation manufacturer
  • Specialised two-part foam adhesive to secure panels to steel tray (avoids mechanical fasteners and thermal bridging)
  • Compatible with any Viking membrane roofing product; including torch-on membrane
  • Tapered option — promotes watershed
  • Highest R-Value per thickness — maximum ROI
  • Installed only by Viking Licensed Applicators
  • 20-year product warranty
  • Full System Warranty Option: 20 years
  • BRANZ appraised
Scope of Use

The Viking WarmSpan System has been appraised for use as an insulating roof on buildings within the following scope:

  • the scope limitations of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1 with regards to building height and maximum floor plan areas; and,
  • on limited access flat roofs with steel structural decks subject to specific structural design; and,
  • with roofs constructed to drain water to gutters and drainage outlets complying with the NZBC; and,
  • with roofs constructed to suitable falls (refer paragraph 15.3 and 15.4 of the Viking Warm Roof BRANZ Appraisal); and,
  • with no integral roof gardens; and,
  • situated in NZS 3604 Building Wind Zones, up to, and including Extra High.

The Viking WarmSpan System has also been appraised for durability and thermal performance as an insulated roofing system on buildings that are the subject of specific design with no building height restriction. Building designers are responsible for the building design and for the incorporation of the Viking WarmSpan System into their design in accordance with the declared properties and instructions of Viking Roofspec.

Limitations on Use
  • WarmSpan is suitable for roofs with a minimum pitch of two degrees;
  • Steel tray = Metalcraft Metcom 7, 0.55g thick (alternatives may be used if certified by the project architect or engineer);
  • Waterproofing membrane consists of any of Viking Roofspec's sheet waterproofing membrane systems;
  • The Viking WarmSpan System can only be installed by Viking Licensed installers.
Statement of Building Code Compliance
  • Clause B1 STRUCTURE: Performance B1.3.1. The Viking WarmSpan System meets this requirement.
  • Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1 (b), 15 years. The Viking WarmSpan System meets this requirement. See paragraph 10.1 of the Viking Warm Roof BRANZ Appraisal.
  • Clause E2 EXTERNAL MOISTURE: Performance E2.3.1 and E2.3.2. The Viking WarmSpan System meets these requirements. See paragraphs 15.1 - 15.9 of the Viking Warm Roof BRANZ Appraisal.
  • Clause F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS: Performance F2.3.1. The Viking WarmSpan System meets this requirement and will not present a health hazard to people.
  • Clause H1 ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Performance H1.3.1 (a). The Viking WarmSpan System will contribute to meeting this requirement. See paragraph 14.1 of the Viking Warm Roof BRANZ Appraisal.
  • Clause C/VM2 FIRE PERFORMANCE (of wall and ceiling linings) - ISO9705, Group 1S = highest possible rating.
In-Service History

Viking has been successfully supplying materials for warm-roof-on-steel projects since 2010, however with WarmSpan, the steel substrate is being supplied by Viking as well.
