SmartVent Fresh: Decentralised Mechanical Ventilation System with Heat Recovery
Description

The Fresh is a through wall ventilation system designed to supply and extract air from a space while maintaining a comfortable temperature indoors through heat recovery. Designed with townhouses, apartments, and homes without roof cavities in mind, the SmartVent Fresh can be used to mitigate internal moisture and mould all year round and ease overheating during summer.

Key Features
  • Delivers fresh filtered air to homes, reducing VOCs (volatile organic compounds), viruses, pollens, CO₂, and excess moisture
  • Suitable for new-builds, townhouses, apartments, and properties with limited or no roof cavity space.
  • Scalable solution with each Fresh unit being capable of operating standalone or in groups of up to 16. Units can communicate wired or wirelessly.
  • Slimline design suiting walls as thin as 140mm.
  • Optional temperature, humidity and CO₂ sensor-based automation
  • Low temperature protection, capable of operating between -20°C to +50°C
  • User friendly operation via in-built app controls and Bluetooth
  • Heat recovery core enables the recovery of up to 82% of the heat energy of a home
  • Energy efficient EC fan technology, consuming 1 – 5W depending on fan speed of a paired system
  • Mechanical ventilation helps reduce overheating in summer.
  • Quiet operation between 12 and 37 dB(A) depending on fan speed
  • Full ventilation system design support
  • More effective at maintaining single room temperatures than centralised MVHR models
Scope of Use

The SmartVent Fresh is designed to be installed as a through-wall solution through an exterior wall to ventilate a room. While it can operate individually, the SmartVent Fresh is designed to operate in pairs spread throughout the home for maximum airflow efficiency.

Fresh is suitable to install in new build and airtight properties, as well as in renovations. Ideal for properties where a traditional ventilation system will not fit.

Like other mechanical ventilation solutions, Fresh is an excellent choice for regions with environmental conditions that necessitate closed windows. This includes hot and cold climates, medium to high background noise areas, or regions with strong odours.

Suitable for:

  • Standalone homes
  • Terraced homes
  • Low rise apartments
  • Skillion ceilings
  • Limited roof space applications
  • Retirement homes
  • Student accommodation
  • All New Zealand climate zones
  • Properties with walls thicker than 140mm
  • Easily expandable via the SmartVent design service

The SmartVent team is also able to provide free custom designs and solutions for domestic dwellings.

Limitations on Use
  • Must be installed in accordance with the installation instructions and recommendations made by SmartVent
  • Fresh units can operate individually, but for optimal performance it is recommended to install them in pairs
  • The efficiency of MVHR systems is affected by the integrity of the building envelope, to increase efficiency in buildings built prior to 2002, we recommend thermal and air-tightening measures are undertaken
  • Modification required to install in walls thinner than 140mm
  • Not suitable for larger commercial properties
Statement of Building Code Compliance

The SmartVent Fresh is designed to comply with NZ Building code, although correct design and installation is required in order to meet these standards.

The acceptable solutions for G4 (G4/AS1) outlines specific ventilation requirements in homes. If natural activities or environmental conditions produce any of the types of air pollution outlined in NZBC G4 3.3 , mechanical ventilation is required.

Additionally; as per table 2 in NZS4303:1990, private dwellings require 0.35 air changes per hour, but no less than 7.5 L/s per person when openable windows aren’t available.

In a typical installation, SmartVent Fresh is designed to meet these standards.

SmartVent Fresh also meets the NZ healthy homes ventilation standards for fresh air.

In-Service History

The SmartVent Fresh was developed in Germany and follows a decentralised heat recovery model for a ceramic thermal core first developed in 1999. dMVHR solutions are popular in Europe.

Other Performance Attributes

A range of system add-ons are available to improve the systems effectiveness or ease of use. This includes a wireless wall controller, indoor and outdoor temperature/ humidity sensors, and an indoor CO₂ sensor. All add-ons integrate with the Fresh to increase the systems responsiveness to the conditions around the property.

All SmartVent systems feature a 5-year warranty.

Note that the product must be operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions contained in the operating & installation instructions provided with the product. The warranty on the entire system is void if non-genuine SmartVent parts (including but not limited to; controller, filter, duct, fan(s) and grilles) are used as this may affect performance.
