Using the Right Tiles to Improve Illumination

When light reflects off three-dimensional tiles, it gives a space a brighter and warmer atmosphere.

A good example of this is the Madison range from renowned Spanish company Porcelanosa (exclusive to Tile Warehouse).  This tile reflects light at different angles due to its three-dimensional, gloss surface.  Being a large format tile, it is also a good option for large spaces, bringing a design element into the room.

Light reflectancy and how it relates to interior finishes is an important consideration when dealing with sustainability in our architecture because of energy efficiency. The energy efficiency of a product can be measured by its LRV (Light Reflectance Value), which is determined by the quantity of useable and visible light reflected by a surface, in all directions and at all wavelengths.  This measurement is a number based on a scale of 0 – 100, with zero being absolute black and 100 pure white. So if faced with a dark room, it makes sense to choose materials in lighter colours, preferably white, with a high LRV rating.

The LRV can also be affected by the surface of the substrate – meaning a three-dimensional, glossy surface will have better reflectance whilst flat surfaces only reflect light in a diffused manner.

Light reflectance and how it relates to interior finishes is also an important consideration when dealing with sustainability in our architecture.  When an appropriate surface material and colour is chosen for a room, it can save the client money as there is no need for a high energy based lighting source to be used.
