Specific changes relate to the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) with regard to fire protection requirements. NZBC Clause C (Protection from Fire) has changed and Clause F7 has been amended. From April 2013, the old or new version can be used (installers should check which version they should be using with the specifier of the project).
What are the changes to Gib Fire-Rated Systems 2012?
1. Surface Finish Properties
The key change is a move from surface finish properties as determined by AS/NZS 1530.3 to a classification in accordance with ISO 5660 'Reaction to Fire Test – Heat release, smoke production and mass loss rate Parts 1 and 2'.
All unpainted paper-faced GIB plasterboard sheet materials now achieve a Group 1-S Classification. For paint or wallpaper finishes, contact the supplier of the finishing material.
This is relevant when applying for consent. Make sure you have the most up-to-date specification document from SmartSpec or Masterspec, as this will contain the change.
2. Steel Joist Systems
Steel joist systems have become more common in recent years. To assist with construction, the new book will also include recently tested steel joist floor/ceiling systems.
3. Garage Boundary Wall Details
New construction details for garage boundary walls are included. These now comply with the two-way stability requirement as specified in NZBC clause B1/VM1. The simplest solution is a change to nominally 140 x 45mm timber framing.
4. Text and Drawing Clarifications
The remaining changes relate to relatively minor text and drawing clarifications. This means that there has been little if any change to the majority of the specification and installation instructions.
Once you have the new GIB Fire-Rated Systems 2012 technical literature, check for any changes to the installation instructions, regardless of how familiar you are with the system.

Different plasterboards react differently in fire. As such it is important that only the specified GIB plasterboard is used or that if a substitution is required, due to the requirements of a wet area for example, that only the following alternates are used.
