Why This Carpet Tile is Being Used in Eco-Conscious School Projects Around New Zealand

Aside from being a major design tool to establish the look of education spaces, the right choice in carpets can also be an asset in meeting New Zealand’s mandatory standards for new and refurbished learning institutions. By virtue of the quantity of flooring in a school, choices in materials heavily impact Green Building certification.

The Designing Quality Learning Spaces (DQLS) series from the Ministry of Education gives clear benchmarks for requirements for classrooms in New Zealand, embracing the research that shows healthy spaces can impact physical and mental health, as well as the ability to learn effectively.

Why Millenium Nxtgen?

Millennium Nxtgen carpet tiles from European manufacturer modulyss cover all the bases from aesthetics to sustainability.

Installed in multiple schools in New Zealand from college to primary age students, these carpet tiles offer design flexibility. The range has 36 colours that come in 50 x 50cm tiles as standard, with options for 100x100cm and 25 or 50 x 100cm planks.

Satisfying stringent environmental standards, Millennium Nxtgen carpet tiles are GECA certified, which automatically qualifies them for Green Star credits.

EPD is provided and the Nxtgen range is Green Label Plus certified. Meeting fire ratings for NZ standards, the commercial grade carpet tile is durable, fade resistant and warranted for 15 years against continuous castor use.

Made with 100% regenerated yarn, the carpet is rated Cradle to Cradle Gold (9 colours) and Silver (27 colours). On top of LEED and BREEAM credits, Millennium Nxtgen has 11 WELL credits.

As the exclusive distributor of modulyss products in New Zealand, Heritage Carpets holds significant stock in their Auckland warehouse that can be available on short notice, including for maintenance requirements.

DQLS compliance

Key factors outlined in DQLS relevant to choosing compliant and healthy carpets, and how Nxtgen rates:

  • Lighting and visual comfort: colours are rated from LRV 3 to 28
  • Acoustics: absorption ISO 354, impact noise rating ISO 10140
  •  Indoor air quality and thermal comfort: thermal resistance ISO 8302, air quality no Red List materials, GUT A+ rating for VOC emissions
