The design brief for the College was heavily influenced by a desire to change the way the curriculum is delivered to students and to encourage greater student interaction and engagement. This has seen the creation of three new ‘Houses’ each containing 4 classrooms located around a flexible, open-plan learning area.
To cater for alternative teaching practices, the rebuild also includes a new performing arts centre, refurbished library, extended gymnasium and upgraded administration block.
With a roll of over 600 pupils, quality commercial grade door hardware that would stand the test of time was a necessity. ASSA ABLOY New Zealand worked alongside Opus Architecture and Henry & Kemp to meet the necessary security requirements of the College.
Lockwood Maglocks with a Card Access System were fitted on the entry doors of each ’House’ allowing teachers flexible entry and exit after hours. With 2516 Cam Action Door Closers, the entrance doors are light to open and the narrow profile slide arm removes the temptation for students to hang from the protruding arm of more conventional door closers.
Lockwood 3572Z Classroom Mortice Locks were combined with 1800 Series Plate Furniture and the 70 Lever for the classroom entry doors. With no timber doors in the spec, ASSA ABLOY worked closely with Opus Architecture towards the common goal of utilising an aluminium extrusion of commercial grade quality that had enough room to fit the Commercial Mortice Locks.
Lockwood 3540 Narrow Stile Deadlocks alongside Stainless Steel 192 Offset Entrance Handles were specified for all exit doors.
It is expected that the third and final stage of the project will be completed in time for the 2012 school year.
