For their transformation of a 1980s commercial building in the heart of London, designers Buckley Gray Yeoman used a unique entrance mat design to enhance the elegant reception space.
On entering 77 Coleman, visitors are welcomed into a grand 4-metre-high space, with a sophisticated floor design that is complemented by the Shuttle entrance matting system in an innovative and dramatic style.
Extending beyond the main recessed matwell, 600 individual Shuttle matting squares are cut directly into the terrazzo flooring in 5 x 5 blocks.
Each matting square is set snugly into its own recess in the floor. This installation method provides almost limitless scope for creating unique and exciting, yet highly functional modular designs for any application.
The stylish blocks of entrance matting at 77 Coleman echo the ceiling design, which is cast with rounded square hollows and set alternately with candle-effect pendant lights. The square block pattern is replicated again in the terrazzo flooring to provide further design interest within the space.
The choice of insert is critical to performance. With the primary entrance mat measuring just 2000mm front to back before switching to the cut-into-stone design, the architect specified the most absorbent fibre in the range, which can retain 6.6 litres of moisture per square metre.
A soft grey colour was chosen to blend harmoniously with the grey base of the terrazzo floor. Luxurious underfoot, the insert is 100% Econyl regenerated nylon, making it a sophisticated yet sustainable choice.
