The Benefits of Complete System Specification

Custom Oflow Manawa Bay

Combining products from across a range of suppliers can be problematic in regard to interaction of products, tested systems, and supply chains that could have an effect on the timely completion and performance of a project. Leaving a detail up to interpretation, or not having a complete system detailed can allow people on site to decide the outcome of the install that can cause unplanned challenges down the track.

Take a roof or balcony drain for example. There are various membranes, substrates and installation requirements, such as passive fire, that will affect each individual specified component. Selecting a system fully supplied by one manufacturer will ensure that all components are compliant, tested and approved to be used in the project. It is often seen that a product has been modified on site to try and make it integrate, a non-tested fire solution has been installed, or the product is called up at project hand over due to a customer’s observations of something as simple as a weeping overflow in the entranceway. A roof drain penetration consists of a membrane adhering to a flange, a clamping ring and connection to stormwater system. An outlet and overflow will be installed for each situation with the overflow discharging to a conspicuous position outside the building. This outlet system can range from a 65mm diameter outlet for balconies right up to 300mm custom sump and overflow to service the largest roof install. In the larger installs the membrane will be clamped by way of a fabricated termination bar once adhered to the custom stainless steel sump, and often the outlet via a flanged and bolted connection to stand up to the large flow rates. Custom overflow covers will prevent the entrance of vermin to the system whilst still maintaining access for maintenance.

Allproof prides itself in offering complete systems. The local manufacturer works alongside trade and other product suppliers to ensure that the system they offer covers all facets of the supply. Good drawings for the designer and install details ensure that the contractor knows how to make the products work. Interaction with the trades helps to develop products to improve performance. One example of this is the integrated stainless steel overflow and cowl. This cowl prevents ambient water from entering the overflow from a roof above, or from waterfalling into a sump. Updating the product to include a fully welded clamp ring means that any water pooling in the gutter, or when the gutter is operating with a head of water, will not prematurely activate the overflow. Below the locally manufactured roof outlet, Allproof will have their own passive fire solution to meet compliance and then the system is finished off with an economical and tidy soffit cover to complete the “form” of the system with the “function” behind.
