Safa-Slat Framed Balustrades can be so much more than just a protective balustrade. This style doubles as both a balustrade that offers greater privacy at lower heights, but can also be extended to act a screen to protect from high winds. Beyond protection, Safa-slat is also great for concealing any unsightly aspect of a house such as an Aircon unit. In an apartment setting these balustrades make a perfect divider between unit balconies.
These horizontal safa slat styles by Unex Systems can be used for both external and internal applications, including decks, balconies, stairways and landings, mezzanine floors, screens and pedestrian gates.
It is ideal for standard height balustrades where privacy from lower areas is required, apartment dividers, as well as screens for patios, back of barbeques and higher wind areas.
Unex Systems’ balustrade brands – namely Aluma, Eclipse Vogue and Arena – are designed to and comply with 'A', 'B', 'E' and 'C3' loadings of AS/NZS 1170.1:2002 for residential applications, office and work areas, as well as areas for moving people without obstacles.
There is a wide range of fixing options available to fix to the top and sides of both timber and concrete substrates. The Unex Systems DKG2 gutter bracket system is designed for membrane decks with gutters and waterproofing considerations. Site-specific specifications may also be provided upon request for those non-standard situations.
The standard Unex Systems’ top rails comply with the handrail profile requirements of D1/AS1 for 'Private' and 'Common' stairways (with the exception of the #ARC and #ART top rails), but do not comply for 'Accessible Stairways or Ramps'.
Where a top rail of a balustrade on a stairway does not comply with D1/AS1, Unex Systems recommends an auxiliary complying handrail mounted to the side of the balustrade posts.
For certain buildings such as architectural sky rises (over 3 stories high), light commercial or high pollution areas, a higher grade powder coat powder must be specified.
Producer Statements for all standard specifications can be created online in the registered area of the Unex Systems website.
For non-standard situations not covered by our specifications, a site-specific PS1 and specification may be prepared by Unex Systems upon request.
This 'Safa-Slat' style was designed and incorporated into the Unex Systems range in 2010, in response to the need for privacy and shelter, as well as meeting full balustrade load requirements. It has since been used in numerous projects around New Zealand.
