Alibat Extruded Aluminium Structural Cavity Batten
Description

AliBat is a structural cavity batten for incorporation into installations of exterior cladding materials on buildings to achieve fire performance and high wind rating.

AliBat is extruded from 6061-T6 aluminium alloy and can be incorporated as a structural element. Designed in New Zealand by Nu-Wall, Alibat has been tested by BRANZ Structural Engineers, and is suitable for tall buildings above 10m, with wind pressure performance verified up to design differential pressures of 6.09 kPa.

Key Features
  • Compatible with a variety of panelised claddings
  • Can be installed vertically or horizontally
  • Suitable for use with timber or steel framing and structural concrete
  • When fixed appropriately, can form a structural element
  • Non-combustible — can form part of a non-combustible cladding system as defined by NZBC Clause C3
  • Supplied in 5.80M lengths
  • Supplied pre-drilled for fixing to structural framing
  • Available in mill-finish or powder-coated
  • Does not require a specialist installer
Scope of Use
  • AliBat can be used in conjunction with non-combustible exterior cladding products to form a non-combustible cladding system compliant with the provisions of NZBC Clause C3 — External Spread of Fire
  • As such, AliBat may be used as part of a non-combustible exterior cladding system on buildings greater than 10M in height
  • AliBat has been subjected to testing by BRANZ Structural Engineers with performance verified up to design differential pressures of 6.09 kPa. While testing was carried out on panels having Nu-Wall cladding affixed, similar performance may be expected with other cladding materials appropriately fixed to the AliBat battens in accordance with their manufacturers’ specifications
  • Can be installed vertically or horizontally
  • When fixed appropriately, can form a structural element
  • Suitable for use with timber or steel framing and structural concrete — Alibat can be used over a variety of substrates using fasteners and specs appropriate to achieve a structural fixing
Limitations on Use
  • In applications where AliBat is installed in horizontal orientation, vertical air passage must be afforded, either via an inherent cavity in the rear of the cladding product, or by standing the battens off the structural framing using suitable shimming material to maintain compliant venting
  • If fixed directly over treated timber (e.g. a rigid air barrier) the AliBat battens should be isolated from the substrate by incorporation of an impervious barrier layer, such as MDPE
  • Installation: Alibat does not require a specialist installer, but should be installed subject to supervision by LBP
Statement of Building Code Compliance

Alibat, if designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of the technical literature, will meet or contribute to meeting the following provisions of the NZBC:

  • Clause B1 Structure: Performance B1.3.1, B1.3.2 and B1.3.4
  • Clause B2 Durability: Performance B2.3.1  and B2.3.2
  • Clause E2 External Moisture: Performance E2.3.2
  • F2 Hazardous Building Materials: Performance F2.3.1. Alibat meets this requirement and will not present a health hazard to people
In-Service History

AliBat was developed by Nu-Wall in response to the Amendment in early 2017 to NZBC Clauses C/AS2-7, which applied restrictions to the use of combustible external cladding systems. While primarily developed for incorporation into installations of Nu-Wall Aluminium Cladding, AliBat is compatible for use with a variety of cladding products. Nu-Wall has been supplied to construction projects throughout New Zealand for over 20 years.

Other Performance Attributes

AliBat, incorporated into panels clad with Nu-Wall, has been subjected to testing by BRANZ Structural Engineers.

Structures Test Report #ST1234-001-02 concludes that the configuration tested has the ability to resist design differential pressures up to:

  • 4.52kPa with battens at 600mm centres
  • 6.09 kPa with battens at 300mm centres

Warranty and Maintenance

  • 15 years per NZBC Clause B2.3.1
  • No maintenance is required
