Espan 470 Aluminium Deep Trough Roofing and Cladding System
Description

ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium) is a 0.9mm thick, trough roofing and external wall cladding profile that is fabricated from tempered H34 grade aluminium alloy (type 5052). The sheets are coated on both faces with the ColorCote system; a corrosion resistant treatment with a flexible exterior acrylic, polyester or modified polyester coating and with an optional, additional coating of PVDF.

Key Features
  • Deep trough profile, with high ribs for strong defined shadow lines
  • Suitable for use in all corrosion zones, including very severe coastal zones, industrial and geothermal zones
  • Suitable for roofing and vertical cladding
  • Ideal for low pitch roofs (3° minimum)
  • Espan 470 Al sheets are coated on both faces with Colorcote system
  • Espan 470 Al sheets are available in the following sizes:
    • Width: Cover = 470mm, Sheet = 484mm
Scope of Use

ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium) is supplied by Metalcraft Roofing for use as a vertical external wall cladding and roof cladding.

Location:

  • In all corrosion zones, including very severe coastal zones, industrial and geothermal zones as defined in NZS3604:2011
  • In all wind zones up to and including Extra High as defined by NZS-3604: 2011
  • In design wind pressures (ULS) up to a fully factorised ultimate design load of 4.73kPa where specifically engineered
  • Any proximity to a relevant boundary, in respect of spread of fire only

Building:

  • On timber or light steel framing
  • On new buildings where the roofing and wall framing structure has been designed to meet all applied loads during the construction phase and for the life of the roofing profile
  • On existing buildings using timber or steel framing where the designer and installer have satisfied themselves that the roofing substrate will meet all applied loads
  • In conjunction with a vapour permeable building wrap that has a permeability of 36g/m2/day or a vapour resistance of no more than 500MNs/g
Limitations on Use

Location:

  • Where specifically engineered, the engineer must satisfy themselves that the installation of the ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium), including pitch and fixings, will be adequate for the conditions
  • Where fire resistance rating (FRR) is required, this is subject to specific fire design

Building:

  • Contact with other materials must be in accordance with Table 21 (E2/AS1), or compatible with the NZMRM Code of Practice
  • Building height and design wind speed is limited by the ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium) design load span tables
  • For sheet lengths ≤40m, ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium) must be installed on a roof with a minimum pitch of 3°
  • For sheet lengths of >40m but less than <60m, ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium) must be installed on a roof with a minimum pitch of 4°
  • When used as a wall cladding, ESPAN® 470 (Aluminium) must always be installed in conjunction with a drained ventilated cavity
  • Concrete and plaster can cause discolouration to the Colorcote painting. An inert membrane must be used to avoid contact
  • Tanalised timber and some other timbers such as cedar can cause galvanic corrosion. Points of contact must be prevented; in mild environments an inert membrane may be used, in more severe zones full isolation with a rubber or neoprene gasket is required

Installation:

  • Install ESPAN 470 over zincalume powder coated secret fixing clips. Clips to be fixed with galvanised steel (class 5 for severe corrosion zone), 10-12G, Type 17, CL5 Hex Washer head screws.
  • ESPAN 470 (Aluminium) must not come in contact with or allow water runoff from dissimilar metals (Ref: NZMRM table 2.7.2)
  • ESPAN 470 (Aluminium) must be separated from galvanised netting underlay with a high-density polystyrene batten or alternative
  • Installation must be in accordance with Metalcraft and ColorCote technical information
  • Where installed in conjunction with steel framing, a thermal break is required between the fixings and the framing. This will depend on the location of the insulation layer. Timber thermal breaks are recommended although care must be taken to ensure contact with the cladding is avoided
