ABS Uncoupling Systems Offer Alternative Decking Solution

The ABS Schluter 25 uncoupling mat is a polyethylene membrane with a grid structure of square cavities, each cut back in a dovetail configuration, and an anchoring fleece laminated to its underside. Designed specifically for ceramic tile and dimension stone installations, the mat serves as an uncoupling layer, slip layer and vapour management layer that accommodates moisture from beneath the tile covering. The ABS Schluter 25 uncoupling mat performs all these functions while still providing adequate support/load distribution for the tile covering.

Compliance

The New Zealand building standard E2 external moisture determines that tiles can no longer be adhered directly to waterproofing on exterior timber decks. The ABS Schluter 25 uncoupling mat complies with NZBC E2/AS1 as an Alternative Solution in Section E2/AS1 7.3.1.1 removable surfaces.

Product Specification

Supplied in 1m x 30m rolls, the ABS Uncoupling Mat is an easy-to-install system that provides removable access to any sub waterproofing membrane issues that may arise. It provides excellent moisture drainage should water penetrate between the grid underlayment and the waterproofing membrane. The inter-connecting air channels of the ABS Uncoupling Mat allow water and/or moisture to drain away. At a minimal thickness of only 3mm, the ABS Uncoupling Mat is able to provide a cost-saving alternative to the traditional pedestal system. Unlike some tile pedestal systems, any sized exterior rated tile may be used with the ABS Uncoupling System.

Advantages of the ABS Schluter System:

  • Only 3mm thick, specially designed for tiling over
  • Allows the building owner to have a tile and grouted surface finish
  • Cracked tiles can very simply be replaced without removing the ABS Schluter 25 Uncoupling Mat
  • Isolates the tiles from vibration or seismic movement
  • Can be applied directly over green concrete where no membrane system is required and tiled over immediately
  • Can be used where several different substrates merge to form a bond breaker system
  • Is inert, cannot affect any other products or systems
  • Water resistant
  • Has vapour management and release channels in its design

The ABS Schluter 25 uncoupling mat is adhered to the substrate using a PSA Adhesive. The anchoring fleece on the underside of the ABS Schluter 25 uncoupling mat is semi bonded, allowing the mat to be lifted at any stage.

Support and Load Distribution

Since the ABS Uncoupling System is virtually incompressible within the tile assembly, the advantages of the ABS Uncoupling Mat are achieved without sacrificing the point load distribution capabilities. ABS is recommended for application of ceramic/porcelain tiles and natural stone installations to timber and concrete decks. The ABS Uncoupling System serves as a uncoupling layer managing moisture beneath the installed tiled finishes.

Membrane Systems

The ABS Schluter 25 uncoupling systems must be installed over smooth finished waterproofing membrane systems. Waterproofing Systems using duroTUF TPO 1.5mm thick smooth or fleece back and Gripset 2P SBR liquid membrane systems are ideal.

If the application is to be installed over alternative systems, check with the supplier with regards to membrane compatibility and warrant conditions.

FURTHER APPLICATIONS FOR The ABS UNCOUPLING SYSTEM:

  • Green concrete
  • Plywood and particleboard floors
  • Tile over tile
  • Radiant heated floors
  • Pre-stressed and post tensioned concrete
  • Gypsum based screeds and I–joint systems
