One of the hottest trends in the tile industry at present is the use of handmade tiles; small format tiles, that are by their nature characterised by imperfections such as lumps and bumps, crazing, chips, uneven surface and variation in shade, thickness, and size. The beauty is in these imperfections, and there is something intrinsically emotive about these handmade tiles that is not easily replicated in factory produced products. It is a look that has been widely embraced in this contemporary era where people are seeking a reconnection to nature through organic forms, authentic materials and textures.
However, many people, whilst appreciating the handmade look, would prefer something a little less rustic, more durable and less porous… this is where the Argile collection comes to the fore.
This is a relatively new collection at The Tile Depot that has been designed and manufactured by small tile specialists Equipe Ceramicas in Spain. Constructed of a high-quality glazed porcelain, these are incredibly durable small format tiles that convincingly capture the character of handmade zellige tiles. They have all the appearance of hand worked clay, rich in tonal variation and uneven surfaces and edge treatments, without any chips, crazing, bumps, extreme variation of size and thickness. In short, they offer the textural and tonal qualities of the handmade aesthetic without the imperfections inherent in the handmade product.
They can be used on interior floors and walls and wet areas like showers without any concern about wear or porosity. They should look as good as they day they were laid, many decades later. Stocked in six colourways in a 100 x 100mm format, the Argile collection have a warmth and timeless beauty that comes from their earthen colourways and handmade-effect design. They have a matt, easy care surface and can be used in both residential and light commercial interiors.
Whilst much of the appeal of authentic handmade tiles is in fact their perfectly imperfect surfaces, Argile is a fantastic option for those who prefer the more consistent performance and appearance of porcelain whilst still capturing the character of handmade products.
