In transforming Mt Roskill Grammar School’s old library into a modern learning hub, Ignite Architects used Havelock and Awake carpet tiles from Advance Flooring to create an environment that puts smiles on student faces.

"The idea was to create a vibrant and engaging atmosphere," says Aaron Kumar from Ignite. "The library was old and tired-looking, so we wanted something totally different that would invite more students into the space."

The design makes extensive use of slatted wooden panelling on the walls and ceiling, with the ceiling panels stepped to create a wave effect, below which a selection of Havelock and Awake carpet tiles in greens and greys represents a connection with the natural world.

"The colours were largely selected by the school," says Kumar, "and then we worked with Advance to create a chequered pattern at the entrance, connecting the northern and southern entry points as one passes the information desk. This works with the warmth of timber to create a welcoming feeling."

Approved by the Ministry of Education for general use in schools, Havelock and Awake carpet tiles are ideal for learning environments, with a 25dB acoustic rating and Group 3 fire rating for use up to 1200mm high on walls.

For the Mt Roskill Grammar Learning Hub, the carpet tiles provide a warm, comfortable surface on which students can relax, with a tier of wooden bleachers against one wall where they can congregate and watch video projections on a drop-down screen.
