The roof of a swimming pool complex on Auckland’s North Shore, is covered with long run roofing iron with a seam sealer between the steel sheets to ensure water tightness.
Over time, the sealer had failed and rain water was leaking through the roof and was dripping onto patrons inside.
The management were faced with the problem of removing all the old sealer and replacing it with a more appropriate product. This would have involved weeks of work and the labour cost would have been prohibitive. Instead, they chose to use 3M 4412N Extreme Sealing Tape to make the complex weather tight.
This tape is a soft, 2mm thick pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive tape designed for difficult sealing applications. The backing of the tape is a very tough, yet flexible ionomer that has excellent abrasion and UV resistance making it particularly suitable for long term outdoor use in sealing existing seams and penetrations.
The contractors at the swimming pool complex only needed to scuff and clean the roofing steel on either side of the join and then lay the tape in place over the top of the old sealer.
A quick roll down to ensure maximum adhesion, completed the installation in a few days rather than the weeks required to replace the old sealant.
