Heat Pump Wall and Ceiling Variotherm Heating System — Detached House
Description

Variotherm Modular Panels for surface heating and cooling of walls and ceilings is an innovation in interior comfort expanding on the popularity of underfloor heating. It’s the same principle of radiant comfort but more convenient and more efficient as well as being much faster to react. The Variotherm Modular Panel systems are supplied in sheets of Termacell, a new green building product, made of gypsum and recycled newspaper. The panels are attached to the wall or ceiling and are stopped then painted just like plaster board. The pipe work is connected back to a manifold and warm or chilled water is circulated through the panel delivering comfort to the body.

The hydronic heat pump system:

  • BRANZ appraised Multitubo Piping System
  • Highly efficient Japanese Chofu heat pump
  • SmartOne controller

Optional extras:

  • Cooling
  • Hot water cylinder heating
  • Other hydronic options such as radiators/underfloor and towel rails
  • Can be integrated with solar power systems
Key Features
  • Wall and ceiling systems heat the entire room evenly and at a lower temperature, reducing energy consumption
  • Suitable for low or net zero carbon homes
  • Healthy — no forced airflow, central heating and cooling is ideal for people with respiratory or allergy problems
  • Silent and comfortable — invisible whole home heating
  • Flexible design options — can add cooling, hot water cylinder heating, and radiators/underfloor

Module Wall

  • Highly energy-efficient heating and cooling system
  • Pipes spaced at 75mm for high output
  • Works with low temperatures for heating and high temperatures for cooling, saving energy
  • Attached to metal or wooden support structures as drywall construction
  • Pipes integrated into the rear of gypsum fibre boards
  • Easy planning for light switches and power sockets
  • Simple pipe locating tools for picture hanging between pipes

Module Ceiling

  • Same panel can be used for ceiling heating or cooling
  • Perforated Acoustic Module Panels serve four functions: ceiling lining, acoustic aid, heating, and cooling
  • Gentle, almost unnoticeable heating/cooling for maximum comfort
  • Engineers at Central Heating New Zealand calculate required surface area and advise on installation

Scope of Use

Central Heating New Zealand offer a free engineered design service to create a system suitable to provide even, radiant heating to the whole home

  • Residential — single storey, multi-storey, standalone or apartment dwellings
  • Variotherm panels replace plasterboard linings (GIB)
  • Suitable for all climate zones — minimum outdoor air temperature: -20°
  • Can be integrated with solar power systems

Limitations on Use
  • Requires wall/ceiling insulation values compared to an un-heated floor, refer to H1/AS1
  • Design required
  • Not suitable for bathroom heating/under shower heating, or pool rooms
  • Limited cooling performance (design required)

Statement of Building Code Compliance
  • B2 Durability — BRANZ Appraised. Multitubo primary pipes have a life expectancy in excess of 50 years
  • H1 energy efficiency — systems are designed to be efficient in their operation and the insulation required for heated elements as listed in AS1 must be achieved
  • G12 — The Multitubo primary piping system has been appraised for use as the piping components for water supply as per the scope of New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) Acceptable Solution G12/AS1, and verification method G12/VM1 and as pipe for proprietary heating systems subject to specific design.

In-Service History

Central Heating New Zealand has been installing hydronic heating systems in over 15,000 residential and commercial projects throughout New Zealand over the last 23 years.

Chofu heat pumps have been in use in New Zealand since 2014.

Other Performance Attributes
  • Chofu are the first of its kind to use R32 refrigerant in New Zealand, which has than half the GWP (global warming potential) of R410A
  • R32 efficiently conveys heat it requires less refrigerant volume per kW. This equates to a 10% reduction in energy consumption
  • The R32 Chofu boasts heating efficiencies over a COP of 4.5 and delivers water temperatures up to 60°C at high efficiency
  • Chofu heat pumps patented anti-frost technology ensures high performance is maintained in temperatures as low as -20°C
