Bespoke Carpets and Rugs Evoke the Impression of Ocean Waves at Metita

Located at The Grand by SkyCity, Metita was led by celebrated Aotearoa Chef Michael Meredith and his vision to introduce modern high-end Pacifica cuisine to Auckland. Architectural Designers CTRL Space were tasked with designing an authentic venue that would harmonise with Sky City's range of restaurants while showcasing the refined menu.

Metita was named in in honour of Michael's mother and the CTRL Space team worked closely with Michael to incorporate meaningful stories and insights that gave direction to the design process, resulting in an authentic and culturally significant atmosphere.

“The design takes inspiration from the culture, cuisine and art of the Pacific. Directly influenced by traditional fishing tools and the essence of the ocean itself, the restaurant offers an immersive experience; where rich textures and high-end materials complement the lavish menu.” — CTRL Space

CTRL Space designed the restaurant within the existing space constraints. Enveloped in dark wooden panels, the interior features an enclosed cellar with an impressive collection of fine wines along one wall and a striking example of Pacifica artwork by Amanda Stowers of Masina Creative on another. The design aims to evoke a sense of calm and place by reimagining colour, texture, and material. The spatial features and crafted design elements pay homage to the essence of Samoa, fishing and the moana in a new way.

CTRL Space consulted with the Jacobsen team to select area rugs that would complete the space. The Shaw Contract Watercolor range stood out as the perfect choice to complement the natural fibres and timber tones layered against the cooler, underwater-like ceiling. These large rugs showcase a blend of colours inspired by nature and artist brushstrokes, evoking the impression of ocean waves. Jacobsen worked with the design team to adapt the range with custom shades that enhance the theme of the interior and create a truly immersive experience.

The resulting space appeals to food lovers looking for something new and hotel guests alike. Metita has made an impact on the hospitality scene, winning the Hospitality Award at the 2024 Interior Awards and being selected as a finalist in the prestigious global Restaurant and Bar Design Awards 2024.
