Lighting and the Aging Eye

Whether seniors continue living in their own homes or move to an apartment or retirement community, lighting both artificial and natural will become an ever important part of everyday life adding to the comfort, safety and enjoyment of the living environment.

A study in the UK on the impact of light on outcomes in Healthcare settings highlighted a decrease in the length of stay of patients, a decrease in dependency on medication and greater staff retention where centres had integrated a good mix of daylighting and view to the outside environment within a facilities design.

The Solatube Daylighting System has for many years been utilized within the design of aged care facilities in areas such as bathrooms, hallways, corridors and living areas where the direct benefits of natural light are enjoyed and ultimately the cost for artificial lighting is minimized.

In a recent upgrade project to an age care facility the Solatube Daylighting System with integral dimmer control has been put to good use in a hospital apartment on the southern side of the facility which had views to the exterior but lacked good exposure to natural light. The end result transformed the space to a room bathed in daylight with the ability for the occupant or staff to adjust the daylight level to suit the individual and/or the particular use of the room.
