The original surface from the children's hospital ward to the outside playground was a wooden deck that had suffered years of abuse and exposure to weather, and developed a dangerous surface that was causing health and safety risks to both adults and children.
As a solution, in February 2015 Burgess Matting and Surfacing installed surfacing extensions alongside a 6.5 x 1.5 x 15mm Rebound Rubber roll. Installation for deck matting is fairly simple – with only cutting-in around the door frame required – and in this situation, the matting was fixed at the high and low ends of the ramp using a carbond adhesive.
One core requirement for Wellington Hospital was to ensure a smooth transition onto the matting. With the ability to customise and accommodate every need, Burgess was able to bevel both exposed edges from a 15 to a 3mm lip to minimise the potential for trip-hazards when walking over the rubber.
The fibrous matting surface offers a variety of heath and safety benefits including non-slip and anti-fatigue properties, making it perfect for this high-traffic area.
Burgess Matting and Surfacing products are made out of recycled rubber, offer endless colour potentials (including the universal 'red carpet' Burgess Rebound Roll) and are suitable for internal and external use. The manufacturing process can alter the density of the mat to meet all non-slip, anti-fatigue and impact/noise absorbency needs.
