Earthquake Resistance in Seismic Times

PrefabNZ is a catalyst for prefab collaboration, a front-door-portal for prefab information and an incubator for prefab innovation.

NZ Wood is the operational arm of the Wood Council of New Zealand. It is committed to enabling and facilitating the uptake of timber, including engineered timber, as the construction material of choice in the residential and commercial sectors. NZ Wood attaches significant importance to knowledge exchange and acknowledges the support of PrefabNZ.

Earthquake resistance – the topic of the moment

The Massey University CoCA building is one of the first combination STIC/PRESSS-lam systems to be used in New Zealand. There are four key components of prefabrication on the project, not withstanding the normal elements like plant and equipment and precast wall panels.

1.  LVL Frame (Columns and Beams)
2.  Composite Floor Slabs
3.  Roof
4.  Unitised Curtain-wall.

This prefab mix has brought the programme forward by an estimated eight weeks, in spite of some reasonably complex structural design and “world first” learning curves.

The afternoon will include presentations on the new CoCA building at Massey University’s Wellington campus and a site visit of the building as it nears completion. Please wear closed-toe flat shoes for site visit. Afternoon tea will be provided and the event will finish with drinks so you can continue your conversations.

This event has 40 CPD points for registered architects (NZRAB) and 4 Licensed Building Practitioner points (LBP) from the Department of Building and Housing (DBH).
