The Mangawhai Estuary House, designed by Belinda George Architects, recently earned the coveted title of the 2024 Rural Home of the Year. Situated along the tranquil Mangawhai Estuary, the home is a harmonious blend of modern design and natural beauty, epitomising sustainable rural living. The project's aim was to create a residence that respects and enhances its environment while meeting the highest standards of contemporary architecture.
Product selection
A significant challenge in this project was selecting a roofing solution that could withstand the coastal elements, accommodate the complex roof shape with an internal courtyard, and support solar panels for sustainable energy. The Nuralite Nuratherm Warm Roof System, in Charcoal, was chosen for its exceptional performance and aesthetic appeal. Spanning 600m², this system provided a comprehensive solution that aligned perfectly with the project’s requirements.
The Nuratherm Warm Roof System represents international best practices for flat roofs by placing a 100% continuous insulation layer above the substrate, completely unimpeded by thermal bridging. This design ensures the entire roof area is enclosed with a highly efficient insulation layer, abolishing any interstitial condensation within the roof space, and eliminating the need for unsightly roof vents.
The system's CodeMark certification adds an extra layer of confidence, assuring compliance with New Zealand building codes and standards. Moreover, its installation at a minimal slope of 1 degree offers maximum design freedom, which was crucial for the unique architectural vision of the Mangawhai Estuary House.
Installation and benefits
The installation of the Nuratherm Warm Roof System was executed by the Nuralite certified team at Torchworks in Mangawhai. The process involved meticulous planning and execution to ensure complete coverage, especially given the roof’s intricate design. The system’s flexibility allowed it to adapt seamlessly to the roof’s angular contours, resulting in a flawless finish.
Key benefits of the Nuratherm Warm Roof System include superior waterproofing, enhanced thermal efficiency and building performance, and excellent resistance to UV rays and harsh weather conditions. These features are particularly important for the sunny, exposed coastal site of the Mangawhai Estuary House. Additionally, the system’s robust construction supports the installation of solar panels, contributing to the home’s sustainability goals.
Final result
The Mangawhai Estuary House stands as a testament to the successful integration of innovative building products and thoughtful architectural design. The Nuratherm Warm Roof System, expertly installed by Torchworks, played a crucial role in achieving the home’s resilience and beauty, ensuring it will remain a landmark in rural home design for years to come.
