Heritage Meets Innovation: How Jesani is Protecting 120-Year-Old Timber Floors

For the historic Glenmurray Villa on a sheep station in the Waikato, protecting the integrity of the 120-year-old timber floors in the wetroom was paramount. Jesani collaborated closely with the owners and builders to fabricate a fully customised level-entry threshold shower channel, providing a seamless result that ticked all the boxes.

The challenge

The project required a full-width, level-entry shower channel to ensure effective drainage from a power shower and capture accidental overflows from the bath. The clients also wanted the shower to be accessible for all mobility levels, and to provide 100% water ingress protection for the substrate. Additionally, they requested a stainless steel grille insert for a modern look and maximum drainage.

The Jesani Threshold Shower Channel Solution

Jesani’s solution was a fully customised threshold shower channel, incorporating their patented flanged system. The standard Jesani 90mm flange on the wet side was engineered lower than the dry side, ensuring that once the waterproofing and tiles were added, the tiled floor would sit flush with both the grill insert and the timber flooring.

The custom 20mm flange on the dry side was fabricated to sit on top of the timber flooring to allow the glass panel to align with a seamless finish.

Once the floor was lowered, installation was straightforward: the builders simply cut a slot, dropped in the Jesani channel, and secured it with the provided fixings.

Measuring over 2 metres in length, the channel featured a two-piece grille insert that met invisibly at the glass, making removal for cleaning effortless.

Jesani’s patented flanged design is unique, making them the only company able to offer this type of shower channel. The design requires no support beneath the trough and guarantees a level entry for all Jesani channels, no matter where they’re installed in the shower or bathroom.

The Glenmurray bathroom was among the last in the region to receive consent for a timber floor wetroom, so the owners were determined to get it right.

They prioritised 100% water ingress protection for the substrate, combined with high-capacity drainage to prevent overflows from damaging the timber floor, while meeting the design brief of a sleek, modern stainless steel finish.

As the owners said, “You guys [Jesani] went above and beyond and absolutely nailed it. Thank you.” Their private bathroom retreat from busy life was quickly adopted by their young children, proving the success of the customisation in both practicality and design.
