Constructed in 1900 with an adjacent hall built a decade later, the Church and Village Centre have played an important role in the local community for over one hundred years.
Changes over time however, have seen much of the original timber detailing on the buildings stripped, with the exterior colour scheme reduced to monochrome.
This project, led by Matthews & Matthews Architects, involved the exterior and interior restoration of the Church and Hall, and the construction of a new entrance and link building.
Thanks to the restoration works - which included a complete repaint of the buildings - original details that were once lost have now been restored. The historic architecture has been greatly enhanced by the new colour scheme, which was developed based on research including historic photographs and on-site investigation of early paint schemes, which showed detail on the Church and Hall had originally been highlighted with darker tones.
The paint scheme was complemented by a palette of natural materials including Rosewood main doors, slate and copper roofing, bluestone walls, timber decking and exposed aggregate landings. In conjunction with the building restoration work, landscape and street works, the colour scheme reinforces the Mt Eden Methodist Church and Hall as a key element of the Mt Eden Village in Auckland.
