Building consents in the past 12 months totalled 43,466, achieving record levels of growth. According to Stats NZ, in the 12 months to the end of May, the number of new homes consented was up 17%, including a 28% rise in Auckland consents. In May 1,380 new townhouses were consented, the highest monthly total since records began in 1990. Looking at the previous 12 months, consents for medium density dwellings rose by a staggering 49%.
Stats characterises multi-unit homes as all types of new homes except stand-alone houses, including townhouses, flats, and units; apartments; and retirement village units.
In the May 2021 year, commercial consents totalled $7.9 billion, up 21% from the last 12 months. Education continues to make up a large and important sector in the commercial market, with the highest value at $1.5 billion in the last 12 months.
