According to Stats NZ, 50,858 new homes were consented in the year ended March 2022 setting a new annual record.
In the year to March, the annual number of multi-unit home consents (25,475) exceeded stand-alone houses (25,383) for the first time. Compared with the previous 12 months, consents for multi-unit homes increased 40% compared to stand-alone houses which rose 12%.
Four regions reached record annual consent numbers (compared to the year ended March 2021). These were:
- Auckland – 21,477 (up 23%)
- Wellington – 3,836 (up 26%)
- Canterbury – 8,557 up ( 41%)
- Otago – 2,506 (up 34 percent).
Looking at commercial work, the value of non-residential building consents totalled $8.5 billion, led by continued strong demand for education, factories, and storage buildings.
