According to Stats NZ, in the 12 months to the end of February 2021, townhouses/flats and units were up 37.7% compared to the same period last year. 39,725 new dwellings were consented in the year ended, and in February 3,129 new dwellings were consented. “There are a high number of townhouses, flats, and units in the pipeline of building projects for 2021. Some of the larger projects may extend beyond 2021,” construction statistics manager Michael Heslop said.
In the February 2021 year, commercial consents totalled $7.1 billion, down 2.7% from the last 12 months. The commercial building types with the highest values were education buildings (up $267 million), storage buildings (up $232 million) and office, administration, and public transport buildings. The type of commercial construction that saw a dip in values were retail and hospitality, social and religious buildings and hostels/boarding houses.
