New consents up 20% year on year

According to Stats NZ, 45,119 new dwellings were consented in the year ended July 2021, up 20% compared to the same period last year. The figures include consents from the lockdown period in 2020, which disrupted council processes.

“New dwelling numbers rose across all regions except Marlborough and Otago in the latest year,” said Michael Heslop, Construction Statistics Manager, Stats NZ.

In Auckland, new home consents rose 29% in the last months. In Canterbury, the number of new homes consented rose 19%, while across the South Island consents declined by 11%.

In the July 2021 year, commercial consents totalled $7.8 billion, up 15% from the last 12 months. The commercial building types with the highest values were Education buildings (up 26%), factories (up 70%) and office, administration, and public transport buildings (up 10%).
