Federal Street was always going to be a fantastic location for the new bar and eatery in the Cook Brothers stable, the Glass Goose, but the site presented a unique set of challenges.
Perched on the second storey of a retail block, the architect wanted to achieve the maximum amount of light and space. Using wide glass bi-fold doors running the full length of the building, the completed outdoor space is both attractive and functional. As the outdoor area was previously the rooftop of the neighbouring building, space was limited and no more than a 3º pitch on the proposed outdoor canopy was possible.
By specifying the BRANZ appraised ClearVue Roofing System by PSP, the architect achieved a stunning result which complies with the NZBC and has a full 15 year warranty. The completely clear panels offer 90% light transmission and are supported on a lightweight blackened steel structure, which was cost-effective and easy to transport and handle on site. With hardwood flooring underfoot and lush green foliage, the bar offers an outdoorsy ambience. The reality that 80% of the roof is covered is hardly noticeable — except that the patrons don't get wet or sunburnt — despite Auckland's notorious 'all seasons in one day' climate.
