How Lossnay Fresh Air Heat Recovery Ventilation Can Assist with Homestar Certification

The New Zealand Green Building Council's Homestar certification represents a significant step forward in the creation of sustainable living spaces within New Zealand. By adhering to Homestar's guidelines, builders and architects commit to creating homes that are healthier, warmer, drier, and more comfortable, all while consuming less power and water compared to homes built to the minimum standards set by the New Zealand Building Code.

Mitsubishi Electric Lossnay Ventilation Systems not only help with the minimum ventilation requirements for Homestar certification, but also offer up to 5 points towards Good, Best and World Leading Homestar ratings by improving energy efficiencies and indoor air quality.

Homestar homes go beyond the New Zealand Building Code

A Homestar certified home exceeds the baseline requirements of the Building Code, incorporating advanced design and building practices that ensure higher levels of thermal performance, energy efficiency, and use of healthy, sustainably sourced materials. This commitment to sustainability not only addresses the immediate needs of homeowners for a better living environment but also contributes to the broader environmental goals of reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainable development practices across New Zealand's residential sector.

The ventilation credit criteria in Homestar Design

Ventilation plays a crucial role in Homestar's assessment framework, particularly in alleviating indoor moisture, improving air quality, and reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses and mould. Homestar rewards designs that incorporate effective ventilation strategies, offering up to 5 points for integrating and commissioning a balanced pressure Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation (MHRV) system like Mitsubishi Electric’s Lossnay.

There is a mandatory minimum of ventilation points for each star rating:

System Type Points Achievable Rating

Continuous Extract Ventilation System

  • To achieve 0.35 acph of the entire home OR achieve 7.5 L/s per person, whichever is higher.
  • EC motors to be equipped to minimise noise and to achieve a higher efficiency.

2-3* Points

Homestar 6 & 7
Homestar 8*

Balanced Ventilation System

  • To achieve 0.35 acph of the entire home OR achieve 7.5 L/s per person, whichever is higher.

3-4* Points

Homestar 6, 7 & 8
Homestar 9 & 10*

Balanced Ventilation System with Heat Recovery

  • To achieve 0.35 acph of the entire home OR achieve 7.5 L/s per person, whichever is higher.
  • Ducting to be insulated with the equivalent of at least 25mm with thermal conductivity more than 0.04 W / (m.k).
4-5* Points

Homestar 6, 7 & 8
Homestar 9 & 10

acph = air changes per hour
* Additional 1 point can be attained through commissioning of each of the above system.

Mitsubishi Electric Lossnay Fresh Air Heat Recovery Ventilation can help maximise points

Designed in Japan for New Zealand conditions, Mitsubishi Electric Lossnay is a balanced pressure fresh air ventilation system with heat recovery that is ideal for almost any New Zealand home, from apartments and townhouses, to large standalone dwellings. Boasting impressive heat exchange efficiencies up to 93%** with noise levels as low as 14 dBA†, Lossnay systems allows you to achieve the maximum number of points* for each of the Homestar ratings, compared to selecting other ventilation systems.

Lossnay Units for Homestar

There are a wide range of Lossnay units that are able to achieve high Homestar scores. The Lossnay range covers both vertical and horizontal mounted units, and extraction from wet or dry areas.
