Located in Kohimarama, Auckland, this classic 1950’s family home recently underwent a big renovation, with an add-on which saw the home grow from its original footprint of 95m² to a much more spacious 170m². With the original weatherboard cladding still in good condition, the homeowners didn’t want to reclad the whole house and instead looked for a weatherboard profile that would match the existing cladding. A-lign by ClayMark perfectly hit the brief — and brought added efficiency and time-savings when it came to painting.
“We were looking for a high-quality weatherboard for the extension that would match the original cladding,” says the homeowner. “We had an area of about 17 metres of older cladding plus 5 metres of the new cladding that would be visible from the road, so we needed to make sure we could create that seamless look between new and old cladding.”
The homeowner and designers considered a few different weatherboard options before landing on A-lign by Claymark in the bevelback profile. “A-lign had the right profile so we could create the seamless look we wanted, and we were also impressed with how strong and straight the boards were — we were confident they wouldn’t move over time,” says the homeowner.
A-lign is a BRANZ appraised precision-cut timber weatherboard cladding made from sustainable NZ radiata pine. The timber of the boards has been finger-jointed to increase durability, strength and stability, ensuring a straight and true product. The weatherboards are delivered to site pre-primed, undercoated and with the first final coat already applied in-factory, bringing greater efficiency to projects.
“We saw A-lign as a high quality solution for ensuring that we would get the seamless look of straight weatherboards, and the pre-primed surface ensured it had a high quality paint finish,” says the homeowner. “The fact that it comes with BRANZ appraisal meant there were no issues with council or any RFI’s, so it was a very simple process.”
Installation was straightforward, helping to keep the project on track, and painting was even easier. The painters were tasked with painting both the older cladding and the new A-lign to ensure a consistent, seamless finish across the home — and using the pre-primed A-lign helped save them time on site.
“The builders found the A-lign product easy to work with and even finished ahead of schedule,” says the homeowner. “And the painters were very efficient because they didn’t have to do any pre-priming or prep — they found A-lign really easy to work with.”
With the renovation now complete, the A-lign weatherboards perfectly match the originals, creating the consistent look the homeowners wanted. “We’re really impressed with the end result — with the boards painted you can’t tell where the old weatherboards end and the new ones begin. It looks seamless across the house which is just what we wanted.”
