Taking inspiration from the terraced streets of Sydney, The Paddington apartment complex in Wellington’s Aro Valley comes to life around a series of shared laneways. These are both secured and enhanced by custom gates and aluminium fencing by Urban Group.
The sleek design of the two-storey terraced housing is enhanced with the use of vertical cedar detailing, which is reflected in the four sets of custom-made gates and infill fencing that control access to the lanes.
Using timber to reflect the building design
"There is a lot of cedar on the façade, and the designers wanted that element in the gates too," says Urban Group’s Fergus Stewart. "We used cedar battens in the gates and also the infill fencing on each side of the supporting pillars."
The swinging gates were originally specified in steel, but this was deemed too heavy and replaced by lightweight aluminium, which still provided the desired look. Completing the system is a custom pillar for each gate hinge that also houses intercom and lighting. With their aluminium frames powdercoated in Satin Black to contrast with the timber palings, the gates create an elegant entryway for both residents and visitors.
Blending in with the surroundings
For the 3m-high boundary along one side of the complex, Paladin aluminium fencing provides security and protection, while blending in with the surroundings. "As this was a brownfields development, we had to match the existing design of neighbouring properties," says Fergus. "We designed everything to fit in."
With a range of strong, lightweight aluminium fence and gate panels, and the ability to custom design and make products in-house, Urban Group can provide stylish, sophisticated fencing solutions for any type of development. For The Paddington, the result is classic looks and hard-wearing performance that will stand the test of time.
