From Vision to Reality: Tile Warehouse's Investment in New Zealand's Outdoors

In the heart of Kiwis, there is a deep appreciation for the great outdoors which is reflected in the way we design and utilise outdoor spaces.

In the past few years, we have seen a major shift towards maximising exteriors and an increase in homeowners, architects and designers choosing to use porcelain pavers and tiles to create a safe, hassle-free, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Tiles ooze luxury which is synonymous with European style, design, and trends, and countries such as Italy and Spain are renowned for setting fashion trends and by default encompassing interior design.

Matching tiles from indoors to adjacent exterior areas results in a seamless look with a definite design edge. As Kiwis continue to embrace their passion for outdoor living, the choice of outdoor surfaces becomes a key decision. Whether opting for robust 20mm porcelain pavers or the safety-focused 10mm outdoor grip tiles, the goal for Tile Warehouse is to provide product options needed to create harmonious indoor-outdoor flow that complements Kiwi lifestyles, whether that be a large family home, apartment dwelling or publicly used space.

What tiles are best for outdoors?

All outdoor tiles must meet certain basic requirements. They must be waterproof, anti-slip, frost-proof plus be resistant to loads, weather conditions, temperature changes, mould, and stains.

Types of exterior tiles available

Porcelain Pavers (20mm thickness)

20mm Porcelain Pavers, being twice the thickness of most tiles, have all the benefits of a regular porcelain tile. They are the ideal paving solution due to their low maintenance requirements, plus they are super easy to install. There is no need to oil or stain tiles and they do not warp, splinter, crack or decay.

Porcelain manufactured to a greater thickness of 20mm results in (a) indisputable aesthetics, (b) outstanding technical performance, and (c) a break-free lifecycle. They are resistant to frost, temperature changes, mould, stains, and salt. They are also highly anti-slip, easy to clean and their materials and colours stay unvaried over time. Additionally, there is no need to oil or stain tiles and they do not warp, splinter, or crack. The outcome is a product that is suitable for many applications and that can be laid both dry (on grass, gravel), and on pro-jacks. Furthermore, high tensile strength makes porcelain pavers suitable for vehicle transit when adhered onto a screed.

Another alternative is to lay 20mm Pavers using adjustable, raised supports such as Tile Warehouse's Pro-Jack supports with open joints allowing for drainage and providing a level tiled area out from doors to exterior living areas.

Considering the myriad of features, it is no surprise that this time-saving, eco-friendly outdoor option for patios, pool surrounds and decking is gaining traction in the New Zealand building industry.

Exterior Grip finish Tiles, 10mm

The alternative, a 10mm thickness in tile, ensures easy installation, facilitating a smooth transition from indoor to outdoor spaces, as many of Tile Warehouse's indoor ranges have matching grip options. This makes it super simple to create flow that enhances the overall visual appeal of a home.

New Zealand's diverse climate, which can bring rain and humidity, also makes slip-resistant 10mm outdoor grip tiles an excellent choice. These tiles are thinner than the paver option but this does not compromise durability or safety. The Grip tiles are frost and stain-resistant whilst their slip-resistant finish makes these tiles perfect for outdoor use, especially around pools and outdoor entertaining areas.

The difference between an outdoor and indoor tile

Though durable, indoor tiles are not made to handle situations such as frost and harsh weather and they are usually around 10mm in thickness. Whereas outdoor options such as 10mm grip tiles and 20mm pavers have the ability to handle exterior conditions and have a texture on their surface that resists slips. They are also designed to be installed onto compacted soil, sand or grass, without the cost of concrete.

In understanding the desire to match indoor to exterior tiles, Tile Warehouse has developed a new product category known as ‘IN/OUT’. IN/OUT ranges are suitable for indoors and out. They are the perfect option for living areas flowing to external spaces with tiles that have excellent grip properties when wet.

Should your outdoor and indoor tiles match?

Choosing indoor flooring to match that of the outside areas allows designers and specifiers to create a truly open living space that will capture the natural freedom of the outdoors.

Pool tiles and mosaics

Post Covid, many homeowners have chosen to invest in quality swimming pools to enhance outdoor living. Bearing this in mind, Tile Warehouse has increased their range of not just pool mosaic tile options but also the classic subway tile style. These tiles and mosaics can be used for full installation or as a border characteristic.

Swimming pool tiles must have a number of characteristics which makes them suitable for submerged areas and most critical are water absorption rate, chemical resistance and mount system.
