According to Stats NZ, in the 12 months to the end of March 2021, 41,028 new dwellings were consented in the year ended, with the monthly total of 4,128 also surpassing previous figures set in October 1973.
“The increased number of new homes consented in recent years has mostly been due to a rise in consents for higher density homes, such as townhouses. The number of stand-alone houses consented in this period has been relatively flat,” says Michael Heslop, Construction Statistics Manager, Stats NZ. Auckland has continued to make up a large proportion of consents, accounting for 43% of all new home consents across the country. Larger density and multi-unit dwellings have also greatly increased in the last six months.
In the March 2021 year, commercial consents totalled $7.5 billion, up 5.3% from the last 12 months. The commercial building types with the highest values were education buildings (up 46%), storage buildings (up 26%) and office, administration, and public transport buildings (up 9.1%).
