According to Stats NZ, September saw a record 47,331 new homes consented in the year ended September 2021, led again by Auckland’s new home numbers which rose 29%. Over the same period, the number of new homes consented in Canterbury rose 31% and 23% in Waikato.
This includes a 46% increase in the number of multi-unit homes consented compared with the year ended September 2020. Multi-unit homes include townhouses, apartments, and flats — all dwelling types except stand-alone houses. Multi-unit homes accounted for two-thirds of all new homes consented in the latest year in Auckland, and nearly one-third in Waikato and Canterbury.
Nationally, there were 21,886 multi-unit homes consented in the year ended August 2021, compared to 25,445 new stand-alone houses.
Education and industrial building drove strong non-residential consents to remain above $7.7B.
