Extra High Wind Resistance from CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles

Viking CertainTeed is a BRANZ-appraised system of asphalt shingles that has a successful 28 year history in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Its portfolio includes profiles capable of reaching an uplift resistance of 205 km/h, achieving an Extra High wind rating.

Before the shingles are laid, a substrate of 15mm plywood or 16.3mm SuperStrand is installed, fixed directly to the truss which provides the base for the CertainTeed Shingles. This substrate provides additional bracing to the entire building, increasing its strength.

Securing each shingle (915mm wide) to the substrate are five stainless steel clout nails with a ring shank, for greater pull out resistance, and a large 9mm head.

CertainTeed Shingles are installed with multiple overlapping layers, providing a strong barrier against wind-driven rain. Even if water is able to track under a shingle, it will come out on top of the underlying shingle, preventing any damage to the substrate or insulation within the home.

The CertainTeed Shingles also have a factory adhesive strip which bonds the multiple layers of shingles together. When the shingles are fixed down on top of each other, the natural heat from the sun activates the adhesive strips (on the underside of the shingles), and these shingles bond to those underneath. This provides strength to the shingles and prevents the risk of the tabs lifting and tearing off in windy conditions.

The CertainTeed Shingle has been manufactured in the USA for over 100 years, providing a century of research and development into the formulation of the adhesive strips.

Asphalt shingles are available with wind ratings ranging from Medium (133 km/h) to Very High (175 km/h). Fixing specifications and warranties are available from Viking Roofspec for users seeking an Extra High wind rating of 205 km/h.

Renowned for its resilience in extremely high winds, resorts and cliff-top homes in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands have requested the CertainTeed Asphalt Shingle system by name, to protect their buildings where many alternatives have failed.
