The technology to supply water and air to buildings has never been more fast-paced, so this month we profile some of the systems available from the leading suppliers in the industry.

 | Mirror, mirror on the door
The MirrorLitE door leaf from CS FOR DOORS is a pre-finished double-sided mirror door manufactured using aluminium construction for stability. The unique design allows the mirror to cover the entire face of the door to within 9mm of the front and rear edges. When fitted to a CS CavitySlider, all clashings are hidden when the door is in the closed position. The MirrorLitE Sliding door is supplied complete with recessed side handles and a front edge pull fitted to the leading edge. The mirror skin may be replaced on one side if required, for example to allow a paint finish on the outside of a walk-in wardrobe.

The new Louvretec Product Catalogue and set of brochures is now available online. These will be a valuable resource when designing and specifying louvre projects. Louvretec opening roofs, sun louvres and shutter systems allow control over how much sun, wind or rain is received, giving greater control over outdoor and indoor residential or commercial environments.

The new colour matching tool from Peter Fell and Resene is now available online. All 65+ concrete colours from Peter Fell have been given complementary colours, and the different tones for each colour created by the sealer have been matched too. With the colours matched by a professional Resene colour consultant, the result allows designers full control in the development of a colour palette for any environment.

 | Interactive 3D graphics now available for Flashman Flashing System
Flashman now has interactive 3D graphics available online for all its systems, including the newly adapted system for brick.
Flashman has adapted its system to fit 70mm brick veneer. It is cost effective, increases weather tightness and provides support to the window or door. Brick laying is made easier and quicker because there is no need to cut sill bricks. Minimal amounts of water enter the cavity and none under the sill, making the cavity significantly drier and warmer.

 | Jagas Stair Treads and landings
Jagas Paving manufactures standard size and custom-made stair treads and landings from 40mpa concrete, so they are strong and durable. Because Jagas manufacture with the finished surface, at the base of the mould they have developed techniques to expose the top surface and sides evenly, creating a finish that is hard to perfect on site-poured stairs and landings. Jagas can replicate existing finishes and aggregates, and can hone stair treads and landings in the factory so that they can be installed without further work onsite.

 | Installing Nu-Wall - exploding the myth
Installation of Nu-Wall aluminium cladding products involves no specialist processes, contrary to popular belief. Builders who are unfamiliar with the product simply need to follow published installation details, there is no need to sub contract to a third party. The simplicity of installing the product was apparent when Nu-Wall was selected as the cladding for the final challenge on this year's "Jack of All Trades" TV show, which will air on TV One in August and September.

Resene Summit Roof is a new waterborne, satin roof paint, suitable for application direct to substrate on some surfaces and recommended over a suitable primer/sealer on other surfaces. | BIM Intro Course with Graphisoft
Graphisoft New Zealand is running a new 3-Day BIM Introductory Training Course for those wanting to stay abreast of the technology that is changing the design industry. The course uses Graphisoft's industry leading ArchiCAD software to demonstrate Building Information Modelling techniques and teaches participants how to build a basic BIM model, then generate plans, sections, elevations, details, schedules and 3D rendered views to create working drawings suitable for local authorities and presentation images for clients. Protect property and people with a Snow Guard from Continuous Spouting
Snow Guard is the latest addition to the Snow Hooks and Straps from Continuous Spouting. The snow guard device is mounted onto a sloped roof surface, preventing a potentially damaging single release of snow and ice. Gutters and plumbing vents can be stripped from the roof, property damaged and expensive landscaping destroyed. Most importantly, people can be injured.
Snow Guard is a low profile, discreet and inexpensive solution to protecting homes and businesses against the many damaging effects of rapid snow displacement from long-run iron roofs and can be supplied in colours to match the roof or spouting.

Vantage windows from APL help to achieve thermal efficiency targets
The new Club Tower building in central Christchurch has become the first 5-Green Star rated office project in the South Island. Weirwalker Architecture began their design work while the Green Star system was still being fine tuned so they had to make haste slowly in assembling the major elements. The latest Vantage Project Report describes how the windows used had to play their part in the achievement of thermal efficiency targets.

New GIB® Aquaseal low VOC
Winstone Wallboards has released a new water-based silicone sealant, GIB® Aquaseal, with an ultra-low VOC (volatile organic compounds) content. GIB® Aquaseal is ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and laundries as it is mould resistant. It adheres to substrates including acrylic linings, bathroom plastics, ceramic tiles, glass, timber and plasterboard. The new sealant is paintable, neutral cure and virtually odourless. GIB® Aquaseal also performs in high movement (+/-25%) and high temperature (up to 130ºC) conditions.

New 90mm thick mineral insulation from James Hardie
To comply with changes to the New Zealand Building Code around insulation requirements, James Hardie New Zealand Ltd has launched a new 90mm thick mineral insulation. This insulation is suitable to achieve the higher R-values required in external walls of residential and commercial buildings. Higher fire ratings can also be achieved when compared with standard fibre glass insulations, due to its unique material properties and higher density (60kg/m3) and when used in conjunction with James Hardie Linea Weatherboard, a fire resistance rating up to 90 minutes can be achieved. To reflect the higher insulation requirements of the Energy Efficiency - Clause H1 of NZBC James Hardie's Fire and Acoustic Design Manual has also been updated.

Plumbing innovation gaining industry wide acceptance
Isotec Ltd is a New Zealand-owned company that manufactures and sells the Isovalve range of products. Isovalves cost effectively provide isolation at all fixtures in domestic and commercial situations. The patented design has eradicated problems with splashing and excessive water flow, with Watermark certification expected shortly. Because Isovalves are installed before the wall linings, leaks within a wall cavity that may not have been noticed previously can be easily identified and rectified before the walls are lined.

Stiebel Eltron heat pump water heater for cost efficiency
Heat pump water heaters are the most cost-effective water heating system available on the market compared to other technologies such as solar, gas and electric cylinders.
Stiebel Eltron's 30 years of research means the WWK300A (North Island) and WWK300AH (for central plateau and South Island) models from Parex Industries Limited have the highest efficiency ratings in their class. 80% of the 300-litre cylinder tank is up to temperature (60 degrees C) and the compressor only kicks in after a 100 litres of hot water has been used, increasing the heat pump's life span. The units also have an "active defrost" feature meaning they use the hot gas to defrost any ice build up on the evaporator, allowing the units to operate at low temperatures. Both units have the lowest amperage compared to other models and feature an enamel-coated storage tank and an epoxy coated evaporator. They are manufactured in Germany and come with a 10-year warranty on the cylinder. Stiebel Eltron has published a heat pump water heater guide with more information.

High efficiency condensing gas hot water heater from Bosch
The Bosch Highflow 26eco+ is a 26-litre, continuous, condensing gas water heater (LP or NG) that operates at 94% efficiency and has a 6.9 star energy rating. It contains a neutraliser to treat the condensate and is the only unit of its type on the market to do this. The neutraliser (good for 15 years before servicing) means the condensate is non toxic/corrosive, so there are no problems with discharge. Switching to a Bosch 26eco+ from a conventional electric hot water system has the same effect on emissions as taking one and a half family cars off the road for a year.

Rheem A551310 heat pump - clean, green and mean on energy
Using a renewable energy as its primary fuel source, the Rheem heat pump provides the benefits of a solar water heater without the need to install solar collectors. Through the use of refrigeration and air conditioner technology, heat is extracted from the surrounding air, concentrated and transferred at a usable temperature into the stored water, discharging cold air back to the atmosphere. The hotter and more humid the ambient air temperature, the more efficiently the system works and the faster the water is heated.
