FEBRUARY 2009 - your monthly publication for interior & exterior ideas

Welcome to the February 2009 edition of ebossNOW
Featuring ... "Best of 2008"

There are a couple of big things this month, firstly we rerun our Confidence Survey. Based on the initial survey (results can be viewed here)that we ran in October, this is your opportunity to comment on the current market conditions. We will collate your views and publish them through the media, to give some perspective from professionals within the industry. All participants will go into the draw to win a 600W, Wireless Ready, Home Theatre System from Samsung, valued at $700.

We also look back at the most popular articles from ebossNOW 2008, including the product launches from Skope, PBS, Caroma, The Laminex Group and Caroma. Also the John Wardle lecture series, and the release of APL's detail components in Revit. This is based on which articles were most read according to click through rates.

In our regular ebossNOW bulletins, read about Dulux's achievement in ISO14001 environmental management - a first for a southern hemisphere paint manufacturer. We also feature APL's new entrance door range, Seratone's new range from The Laminex Group, GIB's new online technical resource, Metalcraft Structural's new technical resource and Peter Fell's new SuperBlack concrete colour.

Most of the industry has an eye on the latest industry stats. Two figures which came out recently were December's Building Consents, with residential consents down 19% and non residential up 16% on December 07 figures. The non residential increase reflected the growth in education, office buildings and farm development. There are also some interesting figures from the Reserve Bank on Housing Loan Approvals which show some consistent trends.

Enjoy the issue. As always we welcome any feedback, and if you think ebossNOW would be of interest to a colleague or friend, please let them know.

Kind regards
Matthew Duder

The Dyson Airblade - revolutionising hand drying
The Dyson Airblade™ is a fast and green hand dryer with a digital motor that produces an air stream flowing at 640km per hour - faster than a Formula One racing car. The Dyson Airblade is 75% more energy efficient than conventional hand dryers because it has no heater - the Airblade pumps air through a 0.3 millimetre gap (no thicker than an eyelash) and acts like an "invisible windscreen wiper" to wipe moisture from hands; killing bacteria and leaving hands completely dry.
Launched at Auckland Airport in 2008, the Airblade is now installed at Britomart, shopping malls, event centres, stadiums, factories and businesses throughout New Zealand.
New colours in Seratone range from The Laminex Group
Seratone vertical surfaces offer a new look for residential or commercial applications with modern metallics with popular classics. With the addition of 12 new colours to the Metallics range, Seratone now delivers a total vertical colour solution.
The smooth and glass like finish provides a tough, durable, non-porous surface that easily resists marks, stains, steam and moisture. The hard-wearing surface makes it ideal for a wide variety of applications, from residential bathrooms and kitchens to commercial situations such as shop fit outs, schools, restaurants and offices.
Design stunning feature walls and floors
ROXX's 2.9m x 1.24m engineered stone panels are ideal for feature walls and flooring. The thin stone technology means that ROXX stone panels are lightweight and can be glued into place, making installation fast and easy. The installation is cost effective, and doesn't cause as much disruption as heavier stone panels that require bracing. Because it is hard wearing, and non porous, ROXX is ideal for dry and wet areas, and as it can be installed over existing wall linings, it is ideal for renovations as well as new builds.
ROXX is supported by trained installers and a limited 10-year warranty. Up to date ROXX colour pallets and specification information is available online.
New online resource from Winstone Wallboards
Winstone Wallboards have launched a new online resource featuring hundreds of CAD drawings for bracing, noise, fire protection and wet areas. With over 70 literature downloads and a full range of product information including plasterboard, GIB® Rondo®, compounds, adhesives, sealants, accessories, technical information is easily accessible. GIB® EzyBraceTM software is also available for download.
Resene ArchiCAD colours
Resene colour ranges have recently been converted into ArchiCAD materials and are available online. Resene colours can be quickly and easily added to ArchiCAD projects using ArchiCAD's Attribute Manager. Once loaded, the Resene colours will be added to your ArchiCAD project file and can be applied to any wall, floor, beam or object - an ideal way to show clients how selected Resene colours will affect the look of the overall project.
Hiding doors - Allaporta's Cortona systems
The Cortona Rebate or Cortona Cavity Sliding door system comes with a pre-finished aluminium and plasterboard frame. The specialised system allows for faster finishing due to the integrated plasterboard jambs. In the plasterboard version, CORTONA only requires the plasterboard to be fixed in alignment with the pre-finished plasterboard surround. Plastering completes the flush finish. The door panel may be painted or wallpapered the same as the walls, giving an almost invisible effect to the installation. The system is also available in Cavity, using Allaporta's strong, high-integrity kitset system, Kit Ferrara and a solid/brick wall version.
The intelligent heating solution
Farho from Parex is a world leader in low consumption, radiant heating solutions. This technology has been patented and uses high-grade oil which is compressed and fed into each fin of the radiator. Each fin uses 110 watts of power to heat, and because each one contains over half a litre of oil, the fins heats up a lot faster, hold the heat for longer, and cool down slower. This economical heating solution is odourless, easy to install and comes with a 10 year warranty. There are three different models, each available in a range of sizes from 3 to 13 fins and with a variety of thermostatic controls to suit all project types.
Easy cleaning with Smeg's pyrolitic ovens
Pyrolitic cleaning offers an easy way to keep oven interiors spotless. Smeg's pyrolitic ovens have a specialised cleaning cycle that uses high temperatures to destroy cooking residue, leaving the oven clean and odour free.
Pyrolysis uses 500ºc temperature to carbonize dirt on the oven walls, turning it into a light ash that is easily wiped away with a damp cloth. The process takes from 90 to 180 minutes and can be programmed to happen at a convenient time.
Dulux Colours of New Zealand - summer colours
There is nothing closer to the heart than the great kiwi summer experience, brought into everyday life with the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range. Each colour is drawn from the familiar hues all around us to ensure the palette works seamlessly with our New Zealand environment. During the summer months, there is nothing quite like the spray of salt water from the deep blue of the Hauraki Gulf or enjoying a rich red merlot from Martinborough. Your cherished summer location is translated into an unforgettable colour with Colours of New Zealand from Dulux.

Allow space for thicker ceiling insulation
Increased awareness of the benefits of good insulation, coupled with changes in the building code, has resulted in the increased use of higher R-value insulation in ceilings.
Generally, the higher the R-value, the thicker the ceiling insulation will be. It is critical that enough space is allowed for the thicker insulation in roof designs while maintaining a 25mm air gap between the roof underlay and the insulation. The latest product guide and data sheets from Pink Batts detail product thickness.

Juralco Balustrades comply with NZ Building Regulations
Juralco Viking Balustrades have been designed and tested to comply with NZ Standards AS/NZD1170 Occupancy A,B,E and C3. These standards require post spacings to be 1.4 metres apart for timber supports and 1.5metres for concrete supports. Where a person could fall one metre or more from an opening, balustrades must be able to withstand 200kg. The key to having the system comply is in the fixing details. Juralco Viking Balustrade Authorised Dealers ensure that a deck is fixed in accordance with the regulations.
LineaTM Weatherboard - 90 minute fire resistance rating
Recently, Linea Weatherboard's fire resistant claims were put to the test when a beach house in Mangawhai Heads caught fire. The intensity of the fire's heat took even the seasoned fire crew by surprise, but Linea Weatherboard stood strong, and helped to prevent the fire from completely destroying the home.
Linea Weatherboard has a fire resistance rating of 90 minutes.

SuperBlack is the new black - black concrete just got blacker
Heading the call from designers that they want the darkest shades possible for concrete, Peter Fell has launched a new colour - 699, aka SuperBlack.
Using a new source of colour, this black is the darkest that concrete can go while still maintaining durability and longevity of colour into the future. It is available nationally and has already proven very popular as it can be used in all cement and concrete based applications.
As with the all concrete, the shade is enhanced with the use of sealers and these are shown clearly in the picture, on the left the PFL Acrylic Sealer and on the right the PFL Glaze Sealer.
A new level of service excellence
Dimond, New Zealand's largest manufacturer of Longrun Roofing and Cladding, Purlins and Flooring, and Rainwater products, has worked together with freight provider DGL to launch a new fleet of trucks and trailers. Designed specifically to carry Dimond's extensive range of products, the trucks are a New Zealand first. The unique "Cassette Deck" design allows the top deck of the trailer to be removed for smaller components to be stored securely in the bottom section. The top is then replaced so that larger items can be loaded.

Building Voices

Virtual building models made accessible for anyone - anywhere
With more clients wanting their buildings visualised, Architects and Designers have typically made static renders or flythrough movies. New software now allows you to create a model environment that the client can 'walk' through. Clients don't require any special software, just send them a Virtual Building Explorer file, and they can explore every room with easy first-person video-game navigation. VBE connects to ArchiCAD 12 on both PC and Mac platforms (Mac due in mid May) and is available in two configurations; VBE, where the modelled environment uses simple shading, and VBE(g) which has the added realism of Global Illumination.
